GENESIS was developed in the Caltech laboratory of Dr. James M. Bower , and first released to the public in 1988 in association with the first Methods in Computational Neuroscience Course at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. Full source code for the software was released in the same year under an open software model for development. It s now supported by the Computational Biology Initiative at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is available free along with tutorial guides on its use. P GENESIS, a parallel version of GENESIS, was first run in 1990 on the Intel Delta, which was the prototype for the Intel Paragon family of massively parallel supercomputers. Chemical analysis of the Genesis Rock indicated it is an anorthosite , composed mostly of the plagioclase feldspar , anorthite . It was originally thought they had found a piece of the Moon s Geology of the Moon primordial crust , but later analysis initially showed that the rock was only 4.1 0.1 billion years old, which is younger than the Moon itself and was formed after the Moon s crust solidified. But it was still an extremely old sample, and was from the Early Imbrian pre Imbrian era . Probing the rock with electron beams, geologists pegged the rock s age at 4.5 billion years.
