  1. GPRS Roaming Exchange

Context date October 2009 A GPRS Roaming Exchange GRX acts as a hub for GPRS connections from roaming users, removing the need for a dedicated link between each GPRS service provider. It was developed to facilitate a more efficient way for operators to interconnect networks, and played a large part in the transition to third generation systems. Development Initially GPRS roaming was based on complicated relationships between individual operators with each operator requiring a dedicated link to each different partner so that math tfrac N N 1 2 math , whereby math N math is the number of global operators that would require a dedicated link. This meant that mobile subscribers who wanted to use GPRS whilst roaming could only do so if their operator had a direct agreement with the operator in the country or area in which they were roaming. In 2000 the GSMA GSM Association developed the idea of GRX to handle all roaming between PLMN public land mobile networks PLMNs . ref http gsmworld.com documents ir3444.pdf Inter Service Provider IP Backbone Guidelines ref Technical implementation Usually, GRX is based on a private or public Internet Protocol IP backbone and uses GPRS Tunnelling Protocol on the session layer OSI Layer Five between the visited PLMN Public Land Mobile Network and the home PLMN. Each GRX operator will have a network consisting of a set of routers and links connecting to the GPRS networks, moreover the GRX network will have links connecting to other GRX nodes in peer model. The GRX operator can therefore act as a hub, allowing a GPRS subscriber to interconnect with many roaming partners without the need for dedicated links. For operators this is advantageous in that it allows quicker implementation of roaming partners, faster time to market for new operators and lower capital expenditure seeing as it is a scalable solution depending on bandwidth and quality of service requirements. Because the interconnection between the visited PLMN and home PLMN uses private ...   more details

More footnotes date April 2009 IPstack GPRS Tunneling Protocol GTP is a group of Internet Protocol IP based communications tunneling protocol protocols used to carry General Packet Radio Service GPRS within GSM , UMTS and 3GPP Long Term Evolution LTE networks. In 3GPP architectures, GTP and Proxy Mobile IPv6 based interfaces are specified on various interface points. GTP can be decomposed into separate protocols, GTP C, GTP U and GTP . GTP C is used within the GPRS core network for signaling between Gateway GPRS Support Nodes GGSN and Serving GPRS Support Nodes SGSN . This allows the SGSN to activate a session on a user s behalf PDP context activation , to deactivate the same session, to adjust quality of service parameters, or to update a session for a subscriber who has just arrived from another SGSN. 1. Network Service Access Point Identifier

Other uses NSAPI disambiguation NSAPI Multiple issues unreferenced October 2009 context October 2009 A Network Layer Service Access Point Identifier NSAPI , is an identifier used in GPRS cellular data networks. It is used to identify a Packet Data Protocol PDP context a unique data session in the Mobile Station MS and in the Serving GPRS Support Node SGSN . It is dynamically selected by the MS however, the MS should ensure that the selected NSAPI is not currently being used by another session management entity in the MS . When the MS requests a PDP context, it selects an NSAPI that it sends to the SGSN with the request. NSAPI is also used as part of the Tunnel Identifier between GPRS Support Nodes GSNs . The user identity International Mobile Subscriber Identity IMSI and the application identifier NSAPI are integrated into the Tunnel Identifier GTPv0 TID or Tunnel Endpoint Identifier GTPv1 TEID that uniquely identifies the subscriber s sublink between the GSNs SGSN and GGSN . The SGSN inserts the NSAPI along with the GGSN address in the Create PDP Context Request. One PDP context may have several secondary PDP contexts and NSAPI. The NSAPI is an integer value within the PDP context header. In the UMTS system the data connection between a GPRS Core Network and a mobile station is identified using an NSAPI, that identifies as well a radio access bearer. In the previous releases of GPRS pre Release 00 , a connection is identified by NSAPI and a Logical Link Control LLC protocol SAPI. However, in UMTS, and thus in GPRS Release 00, the LLC protocol is no longer used. 1. SNDCP

Orphan date November 2006 Unreferenced date June 2007 SNDCP stands for Sub Network Dependent Convergence Protocol. This is part of layer 3 of a GPRS protocol specification. SNDCP interfaces to the Internet Protocol at the top, and to the GPRS specific Logical Link Control LLC protocol at the bottom. In the spirit of the GPRS specifications, there can be many implementations of SNDCP, supporting protocols such as X.25 . However, in reality, IP Internet Protocol is such an overwhelming standard that X.25 has become irrelevant for modern applications, so all implementations of SNDCP for GPRS only support IP as the payload type. The SNDCP layer comes into the picture, when a PDP Context is established and the Quality of Service has been negotiated. Services offered by SNDCP The SNDCP layer primarily converts, encapsulates and segments external network formats like Internet Protocol Datagrams into sub network formats called SNPDUs .It also performs compression of NPDUs to make for efficient Data transmission. It performs the multiple PDP Context PDU transfers and it also ensures that NPDUs from each PDP Context are transmitted to the LLC layer in sufficient time to maintain the QoS.SNDCP provides services to the higher layers which may include connectionless and connection oriented mode, compression, multiplexing and segmentation.
