History RPG Gateway was founded in 1996 by James Mathe of the RPG Host network, and subsequently taken over by Effie Rover of the RPG Nexxus site network in 1999. Since then, it has grown to around 5,000 sites. It has never changed its basic format that of a categorized directory of site listings. In the early 2000s, the site added Official designations to differentiate fan sites from designated official sites, Pick designations to denote Editor s Picks, and a Top 100 list tied to incoming votes, outgoing links and user ratings.
