Christian Gauss 1878 1951 was an influential literary critic and professor of literature. Biography Gauss was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan . His father had fled W rttemberg when Prussia began to dominate it in the 1860s. The son graduated from the University of Michigan at 20, worked as a newspaper correspondent in Paris , taught at Michigan and Lehigh University in the United States, and in 1905 became a first preceptor at Princeton University , where he remained until his retirement in 1946. At Princeton, Gauss became a full professor two years after his arrival he was chairman of the department of modern languages for a time and he served as Dean education dean . After retiring from Princeton, he was president of Phi Beta Kappa . Though he was not a prolific author or a public figure, Gauss left a mark on literary scholarship Princeton University s semiannual series of Christian Gauss Seminars in Criticism founded in 1949 by R.P. Blackmur , and Phi Beta Kappa s annual Christian Gauss Award est. 1950 for a book of literary criticism are named in his honor. Gauss influenced and corresponded frequently with F. The Gauss Expedition 1901 1903 , was the first German expedition to Antarctica, led by Arctic veteran and geology professor Erich von Drygalski in the ship Gauss ship Gauss , which was named after the mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss . Voyage Drygalski led the first German South Pole South Polar expedition with the ship Gauss to explore the unknown area of Antarctica lying south of the Kerguelen Islands . The expedition started from Kiel in the summer of 1901 August 11 . Expedition A small party of the expedition was also stationed on the Kerguelen Islands , while the main party proceeded further south. Erich von Drygalski paid a brief call to Heard Island and provided the first comprehensive scientific information on the island s geology , flora and fauna . Despite being trapped by ice for nearly 14 months until February 1903, the expedition discovered new territory in Antarctica, the Kaiser Wilhelm II Land with the volcano Gaussberg . Drygalski was the first to use a gas balloon in Antarctica. Return The expedition arrived back in Kiel in November 1903. Subsequently, Erich von Drygalski wrote the narrative of the expedition and edited the voluminous scientific data. Gauss s diary was a record of the mathematical discoveries of C. F. Gauss from 1796 to 1814. It was rediscovered in 1897 and published by harvtxt Klein 1903 , and reprinted in volume X sub 1 sub of his collected works. Sample entries Most of the entries consist of a brief and sometimes cryptic statement of a result in Latin. Entry 1, dated 1796, March 30, states Principia quibus innititur sectio circuli, ac divisibilitus eiusdem geometrica in septemdecim partes etc. , which records Gauss s discovery of the construction of a heptadecagon by ruler and compass. Entry 10, dated 1796, July 10, states Eureka word num    &Delta     &Delta     &Delta and records his discovery of a proof that any number is the sum of 3 triangular numbers, a special case of the Fermat polygonal number theorem . Entry 43, dated 1796, October 21, states Vicimus GEGAN . Its meaning is unclear. Entry 146, dated 1814 July 9, is the last entry, and records an observation relating biquadratic residues and the Lemniscatic elliptic function lemniscate functions , later proved by Gauss and by harvtxt Chowla 1940 . More precisely, Gauss observed that if a bi is a Gaussian prime and a 1 bi is divisible by 2 2 i , then the number of solutions to the congruence 1 xx yy xxyy mod a bi , including x , y i and x i , y , is a 1 sup 2 sup b sup 2 sup . The Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize for Applications of Mathematics is a mathematics award, granted jointly by the International Mathematical Union and the German Mathematical Society for outstanding mathematical contributions that have found significant applications outside of mathematics . The award receives its name from the Germans German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss . With its premiere in 2006, it is to be awarded every fourth year, at the International Congress of Mathematicians . The previous laureate was presented with a medal and a cash purse of Euro EUR 10,000 funded by the International Congress of Mathematicians 1998 budget surplus. The official announcement of the prize took place on 30 April 2002, the 225th anniversary of the birth of Gauss. The prize was developed specifically to give recognition to mathematician s while mathematicians have an impact on the world outside of their field, their studies are often not recognized. The prize aims to honour those who have made contributions and impacts in the fields of business , technology , or even day to day life.
