The musical is a backstage comedy that parodies Novello s own swashbuckling Ruritanian romance plots. The story centres around Gay Daventry, a bankrupt operetta producer and stage star who attempts to bring a musical to London. Sadly, this is not a success, but the show s Ingenue stock character ing nue Linda lends Gay some inherited money, and they open up a drama school at Gay s country house. This also turns out to be unsuccessful, but it leads to a theatrical comeback for Gay and Linda and her boyfriend, this time in a hit show. The musical premiered at the Palace Theatre, Manchester , England, on 17 October 1950. It transferred to the Saville Theatre in London, opening there on 16 February 1951, where it ran for 504 performances and starred Cicely Courtneidge , Lizbeth Webb and Thorley Walters . 1. Gay beat

In Australia , the term beat is used to refer to an area frequented by gay men and non gay identifying men who have sex with men MSM who are cruising for sex cruising for casual sex , and where sexual acts occur. This use of the word parodies the beat walked by a police officer or a prostitute . Most commonly, glory hole sexual public toilets , cottaging parks , and nightclubs are used as beats, though sometimes suburban car parks become beats once night falls. Sex researchers have found that a considerable proportion of men who use beats are MSMs rather than gay identifying. This is possibly because, whilst gay men have a plethora of venues for meeting legitimately, MSMs who are often closeted do not risk being observed in or reported as attending gay venues. History Although little is known about beats in the early colonial and Federation periods, it is known that specific areas in larger cities, such as Sydney , Melbourne and Brisbane have recorded histories of use for this purpose through the 20th century to the present harv Moore 1995 .
