Unreferenced date December 2009 Eanmund was a Suiones Swedish prince of the Yngling Scylfing dynasty . Unlike his relatives, Eanmund is only mentioned in Beowulf . Eanmund was the son of Ohthere , and was the brother of Eadgils . If he existed in real life, his real name was probably Proto Norse Aiwamunduz Old East Norse mund or munduz Old East Norse mund . Ohthere died, and Ohthere s younger brother Onela , usurped the Swedish throne. Since their uncle had seized power, Eanmund and Eadgils sought refuge among the Geats . This caused Onela to attack the Geats, an attack which was also motivated by the fact that the Geatish king Heardred s father had killed Onela s father Ongentheow . During the battle, Eanmund was killed by Onela s champion Weohstan and Heardred was killed as well. Eadgils, however, survived and according to the poem Beowulf character Beowulf later helped him avenge Eanmund and Ohthere by slaying Onela, an event which also appears in Scandinavian sources. Unreferenced date December 2009 The W gmundings were a prominent probably Suiones Swedish clan an tt , see Norse clans in Beowulf . A name such as W gmunding meant belongs to W gmund , i.e. they were the descendants of a man named W gmund. This was the normal way of naming a Germanic clan see e.g. Sigurd the V lsung descendant of king V lsung , Folkung descendants of Folke and Yngling descendants of Yngvi Freyr . Members W gmund the ancestor of the clan lfhere seems to have been a distinguished member of the clan as Wiglaf is described as his kinsman Ecg eow joined the Danes and the Geats as he was banished for slaying a man from another clan Beowulf character Beowulf son of Ecg eow and the hero of the epic by his name Weohstan Swedish champion and slayer of his fugitive countryman prince Eanmund Wiglaf the last of the W gmundings and son of Weohstan. He fought with Beowulf against the dragon The story of this clan in Beowulf is that Ecg eow slew a man, Hea olaf , from another clan, the Wulfings probably the rulers of the less known East Geats . As the W gmundings would not or could not pay the expected wergild , Ecgtheow was banished and sought refuge among the Daner Danes . The Danish king Hrothgar paid the wergild and had Ecg eow swear an oath. Later, Ecg eow served the Geats and distinguished himself enough to marry the Geatish king Hre el s daughter, with whom he had the son Beowulf. During the Swedish Geatish wars , Ecg eow s close relative, Weohstan, fought on the Swedish side for Onela , and killed Onela s nephew Eanmund . The fact that these characters are described as W gmundings explains why the Swedish warrior Wiglaf became the companion of Beowulf although his father had fought against the Geats. Since Ecg eow, Beowulf s father, was a close relative of Weohstan, Wiglaf s father, it is not surprising that Wiglaf after his father s death joined his relative Beowulf in G taland Geatland , and that Beowulf assumed responsibility for the young Swede.
