Taxobox virus group ii familia Geminiviridae subdivision ranks Genera subdivision Mastrevirus br Curtovirus br Begomovirus br Topocuvirus Geminiviruses are plant viruses which have single stranded circular DNA genomes encoding genes that diverge in both directions from a virion strand origin of replication i.e. geminivirus genomes are ambisense . According to the Baltimore classification they are considered class II viruses. It is the largest known family of single stranded DNA viruses. Mastrevirus Transmission medicine transmission is via various leafhopper species e.g. maize streak virus and other African streak viruses are transmitted by Cicadulina mbila , curtoviruses and the only known topocuvirus species, Tomato pseudo curley top virus , are transmitted by treehopper species e.g. Tomato pseudo curley top virus is transmitted by the treehopper Micrutalis malleifera , and begomoviruses are transmitted by the whitefly species, Bemisia tabaci . These viruses are responsible for a significant amount of crop damage worldwide. Epidemics of geminivirus diseases have arisen due to a number of factors, including the Genetic recombination recombination of different geminiviruses coinfecting a plant, which enables novel, possibly virulent viruses to be developed. Other contributing factors include the transport of infected plant material to new locations, expansion of agriculture into new growing areas, and the expansion ... Although a number of viruses infect fungi, this virus is the only known example of a DNA virus infecting a fungus. Virology The virions are isometric particles, 20 22 nanometer s in diameter. The capsid is composed on the viral coat protein. Genome The genome encodes only two proteins a replicase and the coat protein. The genes are encoded on complementary strands. Taxonomy This virus appears to be related to but distinct from the Geminiviridae . Unlike the Geminiviridae this virus does not have a movement protein and the replicase gene lacks an intron . - Cotton leaf curl virus
Taxobox color violet name Cotton leaf curl virus CLCuV virus group II The ssDNA Viruses familia Geminiviridae genus Begomovirus species Cotton leaf curl virus synonyms In Asia and Africa the major disease of cotton is caused by the Cotton leaf curl geminivirus CLCuV . Leaves of infected cotton curl upward and bear leaf like enations on the underside along with vein thickening. Plants infected early in the season are stunted and yield is reduced drastically. A. Nadeem and Z. Xiong, University of Arizona This virus devastated the Pakistan cotton industry in early 1990 s where it caused an estimated yield reduction of 30 35 . Description All begomovirus species causing cotton leaf curl disease have geminate particles, approximately 18 20  nm in diameter and 30  nm long and a circular, single stranded DNA genome. All except Cotton leaf crumple virus have a monopartite genome, with all viral products required for replication, systemic movement and whitefly transmission encoded on a single DNA component of c. 2.75 kB DNA A . The genome of CLCrV is bipartite. Two smaller, circular, single stranded DNA molecules, named DNA 1 and DNA , are associated with a range of monopartite begomoviruses from the Old World including the cotton leaf curl viruses. These molecules are regarded as satellite molecules as they depend on the helper begomovirus to support one or more stages of their infection cycle movement and insect transmission for both molecules and, additionally, replication in the case of DNA . DNA is symptom modulating and typical cotton leaf curl disease symptoms only develop when this molecule is present in the absence of DNA , the concentration of viral DNA DNA A is low and the symptoms of infection very mild. It is an important vector of several viruses and phytoplasmas worldwide. In Australia, phytoplasmas vectored by O. orientalis cause a range of economically important diseases including legume little leaf, tomato big bud, lucerne witches broom, potato purple top wilt, Australian lucerne and is a possible vector of Australian grapevine yellows. O. orientalis also transmits Tobacco yellow dwarf virus TYDV genus Mastrevirus , family Geminiviridae to beans, causing bean summer death disease and to tobacco, causing tobacco yellow dwarf disease. Although some direct damage caused by leafhopper feeding has been observed, it is relatively minor compared to the losses resulting from disease. These have thus far only been reported from Africa related species of viruses Indian cassava mosaic virus , ICMV are found in India and neighbouring islands Sri Lankan cassava mosaic virus , SLCMV , though cassava is cultivated in Latin America as well as South East Asia. Nine species of cassava infecting Geminiviridae geminiviruses have been identified between Africa and India based on genomic sequencing and Phylogenetics phylogenetic analysis. This number will probably grow due to a high rate of natural transformation associated with CMV ref name Patil2009 The viruses are members of the Family Geminiviridae and the Genus Begomovirus . The first report of cassava mosaic disease CMD was from East Africa in 1894. ref name Legg2004 Since then, epidemics have occurred throughout the African continent resulting in great economic loss and devastating famine . ref name Legg2004 In 1971 a resistant line of cassava, the predominant host of this plant pathogenic virus, was established and used by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Nigeria . This resistance worked as an effective control for many years. However, in the late 20th century, a more virulent virus broke out in Uganda and quickly spread to East and Central Africa. ref name Legg2004 This highly virulent virus was later discovered to be a chimaera of two distinct begomovirus species. ref name Patil2009 Currently, CMD is managed th ... more details
