Unreferenced date October 2008 The genealogy of musicalgenres is the pattern of music genre musicalgenres that have contributed to the development of new genres. Image Genealogy cuban music.png thumb right Genealogy of Cuban music genealogy Genealogical charts or family trees of musicalgenres show how new genres have emerged from existing genres and how multiple genres have contributed to a new genre. Since music can be endlessly broken down into smaller and smaller categories, a genealogical chart will usually focus on one major genre and its different strains. For instance, jazz is considered to be a genre with many sub genres, including New Orleans jazz, ragtime, swing, bebop, free jazz, and Latin jazz. How these developed out of one another is shown in a genealogical chart, often with major figures or innovators of each sub genre. A genealogy of genres may also incorporate several major genres, such as jazz, rock and roll and folk music . The image accompanying this article shows how numerous Cuban music al styles have developed out of many other genres including some from Europe, Africa, the US, Latin America and other Caribbean countries. While focusing on Cuban music, the image also shows the genealogy of many popular music genres since the 18th century. The family tree of music can also be explored by starting at the article for your favourite genre, and clicking on the items in the stylistic origins, subgenres, derivative forms, and fusion genres sections of the genre infobox. The movement is marked by many famous artists through sculpture, film, body art, installation, performance, photography, painting, and media yet to be discovered. The term journalism genres refers to various journalism styles, fields or separate genre s, in writing accounts of events. Newspapers and periodicals often contain feature story features see Feature style written by journalists, many of whom specialize in this form of in depth journalistic writing. Feature articles are usually longer forms of writing more attention is paid to style than in straight news reports. They are often combined with photographs, drawings or other art. They may also be highlighted by typographic effects or colors. Writing features can be more demanding than writing straight news stories, because while a journalist must apply the same amount of effort to accurately gather and report the facts of the story, he or she must also find a creative and interesting way to write it. The lead or first two paragraphs of the story see Nut graph must grab the reader s attention and yet accurately embody the ideas of the article. In the last half of the 20th Century, the line between straight news reporting and feature writing became blurred. Journalists and publications today experiment with different approaches to writing. Tom Wolfe , Gay Talese , Hunter S. Thompson are some of these examples. Urban and alternative weekly newspapers go even further in blurring the distinction, and many magazines include more features than straight news. Some television news shows experimented with alternative formats, and many TV shows that claimed to be news shows were not considered as such by traditional critics, because their content and methods do not adhere to accepted journalistic standards. National Public Radio , on the other hand, is considered a good example of mixing straight news reporting, features, and combinations of the two, usually meeting standards of high quality. otheruses Genealogy In philosophy , genealogy is a history historical technique in which one questions the commonly understood emergence of various philosophical and social beliefs by attempting to account for the scope, breadth or totality of ideology within the time period in question, as opposed to focussing on a singular or dominant ideology. Moreover, a genealogy often attempts to look beyond the ideologies in question, for the conditions of their possibility particularly in Foucault s genealogies . It has been developed as a continuation of the works of Friedrich Nietzsche . Nietzsche Nietzsche criticized the genealogists in On the Genealogy of Morals and proposed the use of a historic philosophy in order to critique modern morality by supposing that it developed into its current form through power relations . Cluster genealogy is a research technique employed by genealogy genealogists to learn more about an ancestor by examining records left by the ancestor s cluster . See chapter 3, Broadening the Scope Cluster Genealogy. ref Researching the lives of an ancestor s cluster leads to a more complete and more accurate picture of the ancestor s life. Background genealogy Genealogical research begins with a question of identity, relationship, event, or situation. To answer the question, a genealogist gathers and analyzes data from Primary source source documents and formulates an answer to the question based on the resulting evidence . The basic method of research is to gather data from records left by the target ancestor and his or her immediate family. There are several situations, however, where a genealogist wants or needs to use alternate research methods. One such method is cluster genealogy, in which the records left by members of the ancestor s cluster are examined for evidence with which to resolve the question at hand. Purpose Cluster genealogy is most often used for the following reasons. To break through a brick wall . In genealogy, a brick wall is a question for which a genealogist has not been able to formulate a satisfactory answer based on the evidence thus far collected. Using cluster genealogy, additional evidence is sought in data gathered from the records left by persons in the ancestor s cluster. For example, if the question is one of place of birth, researching the origins of the ancestor s neighbors can be helpful. TWCleanup In genealogy , a cadet is a younger son , as opposed to the firstborn heir . Compare puisne . Etymology The word is recorded in English language English since 1634, originally for a young son, identical to the French language French , which is itself derived from the gascon language gascon Occitan spoken in Gascony in southwest France capdet captain, chief , in turn from the Late Latin capitellum , the diminutive of Latin caput head hence also chief . Younger sons from Gascon families apparently were commonly sent to the French court to serve as officers as a rule non heirs from the European nobility sought careers in the military or the clergy. Usage As an adjective, cadet is used to signify a junior branch of a family. Thus, the House of Orl ans Orl ans line was a cadet branch of the House of Bourbon Bourbon family. For the status as such, the noun cadency exists, as in the heraldry heraldic term mark of cadency for a feature which distinguishes a cadet son s coat of arms from the father s which is passed on unaltered only to the usually firstborn heir. Military has been the traditional career choice of the nobility throughout the centuries, and it has been customary that the firstborn son has inherited the title, lands and possessions, while the younger sons of a noble family went to military, often to be trained as officers. Hence the meaning cadet branch for a junior branch of a family and the term cadet for an officer trainee.
