Life Antony was of undistinguished background but received a good education, becoming a lawyer in Constantinople in c. 800. He later became a monk and advanced to the position of abbot. By 814 he had become the bishop of Syllaion in Anatolia . Although Antony was an Iconodule , he became an iconoclasm Iconoclast in 815, when Emperor Leo V the Armenian Leo V reinstituted Iconoclasm. The reason for Antony s change of heart is said to have included his hope for attaining the patriarchate. The emperor appointed him a member of the committee headed by the future Patriarch Patriarch John VII of Constantinople John Grammatikos to find patristic support for Iconoclasm. In 821 the new Emperor Michael II appointed Antony patriarch, disappointing the Stoudios Stoudites , who were hoping that icons would be restored. When the patriarch of Antioch crowned Thomas the Slav rival emperor, Antony had him excommunicated in 822. Stephen I lang el , Stephanos IConstantinople November 867 &ndash there 18 May 893 was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 886 to 893. Stephen was the son of Eudokia Ingerina and, officially, Emperor Basil I the Macedonian Basil I . However, at the time when he was conceived, Eudokia was the mistress of Emperor Michael III . Consequently, it is possible or even probable that like his older brother Leo VI the Wise , Stephen was actually Michael s son. Castrated by Basil I, Stephen became a monk and was designated for a career in the church since his childhood. In 886 his brother, the new Emperor Leo VI, dismissed the Patriarch Photios I of Constantinople Patriarch Photios and appointed the 19 year old Stephen as patriarch in his stead. As patriarch Stephen participated in the ceremonial reburial of Michael III by Leo VI in the imperial mausoleum attached to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople . Basil I , surnamed Scamandrenus , ref from Scamandros Monastery , which he founded ref was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 970 to 974. Before his election as Patriarch, he was a monk in Olympus of Syria and continued his monastic life after his election. As a Patriarch he was accused as a conspirator against the Emperor and as a violator of holy rules, but he refused to appear in front of a royal court. He was exiled and went to Scamandrus Monastery, where he died. During his patriarchate, the so called Tragos , the first Charter of the monastical state of Mount Athos , was written and ratified. It was named after the animal whose skin was used for the parchment on which the text was written, namely a male goat.
