    No footnotes date September 2010 Seleucia on Hedyphon was the name of the ancient Assyria n city of Arrapha during the Hellenistic period 331 129 BCE . It was in eastern Assyria on the bank of the river Hedyphon Greek . Known to the Assyrians and to Claudius Ptolemy as Arrapha and Korkoura, the city flourished during the 11th and 10th centuries BCE. Familiar from tales of the saint s lives in East as Beth Seleucia , it was a city related to many martyrs of the orthodox Christian church. The bishop of the city was John, who was mentioned in the chronicles of king Shapur. In the Hellenistic period the city was renamed Seleucia, for Seleucus I Nicator or one of his successors.     Thomas Kitchin 1719 1784 was an English engraver and map maker, who became hydrographer to the king. Life He was born in Southwark , and was apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen in 1732. Originally based in Clerkenwell , by late 1755 Kitchin was established on Holborn Hill . From 1773 Kitchin was royal hydrographer to the king. He died in St Albans 23 June 1784. He married Sarah Bowen, daughter of Emanuel, in 1739, and then Jane, daughter of Joseph Burroughs , in 1762. It was this fortress which was held by the exiled Carian Queen Ada of Caria Ada . She greeted Alexander the Great here in 334 BC. The city could have been renamed Alexandria by the Latmos shortly afterwards, and was recorded as thus by Stephanus of Byzantium , although different sources raise different possibilities as to the exact location of the settlement of that name. The prior name of Alinda was restored by at least 81 BC. It appears as Alinda in Ptolemy s Geographia Ptolemy Geographia Book V, ch. 2 of the 2nd century AD.
