  1. Geographic determinism

Unreferenced date March 2007 Geographic determinism is the theory that the human habits and characteristics of a particular culture are shaped by geographic conditions. Coined by Ellsworth Huntington , the theory looked at the rise and fall of the Roman Empire from 400 500. Much of the fall of the empire had to do with a regional drought which decreased the fertility of the land and agriculture output. The lack of food from this event strained the empire and exacerbated the political situation to the point of collapse. Professor Jared Diamond extrapolates the theory in his Pulitzer Prize winning work Guns, Germs, and Steel . The theory has grown to encompass all environmental and geographic conditions and their impact on the social, political and economic forces of a society. Technology is seen as the only way to mitigate risks associated with geographic determinism. 1. Geographic data

Peacock date September 2011 Geographic data is about much more than electronic pictures of map s. The geographic data that describes our world allows for city planning , flood prediction and relief, emergency service routing, environmental assessments, wind pattern monitoring and many other applications. Geographic data is processed with Geographic information system GIS software which can, as one aspect of its functioning, produce maps . In the United States , geographic data collected by central government is made available free of copyright for no more than the cost of distribution. The United States Census Bureau s TIGER Mapsurfer provides a web service and also offers data free for download. TIGER allows you to build a geocoding facility with which to spatially locate addresses. Given the ability to geocode street addresses and other features, one can create a lot of interesting spatial analysis, location based service , political campaign ing apps and localised search engine search services. In the EU there is a European Union directive INSPIRE directive to establish shared standardization standards between the different countries, accompanied by web viewing of rendered map data, and an unspecified license framework for geographic data. 1. Barony (geographic)

Distinguish Baronage A modern geographic barony in Scotland, Ireland and outlying parts of England, constites an administrative division of a country, usually of lower rank and importance than a county . Origin A geographic barony is a remnant from mediaeval times of the area of land held under the form of feudal land tenure termed feudal barony, or barony by tenure, either an English feudal barony , a Scottish feudal barony or an Irish feudal barony , which all operated under different legal and social systems. Just as modern counties are no longer under the administrative control of a noble count or earl , geographic baronies are generally no longer connected with feudal barons, certainly not in England where such tenure was abolished with the whole feudalism in England feudal system by the Tenures Abolition Act 1660 . The position in Scotland is more complex, although the legal force of the Scottish feudal baron was abolished early in the 21st c. ref P. G. B. McNeill and H. L. Geographic routing also called georouting or position based routing is a routing principle that relies on geographic position information. It is mainly proposed for wireless network s and based on the idea that the source sends a message to the geographic location of the destination instead of using the network address. 1. Geographic information retrieval

Cleanup reason this article features poor external link use, lots of non notable facts, and industry lingo with no explanation date February 2012 Geographic information retrieval GIR or geographical information retrieval is the augmentation of information retrieval with geographic Metadata computing metadata . Information retrieval generally views documents as a collection or bag of words. In contrast, geographic information retrieval requires a small amount of semantic data to be present namely a location or geographic feature associated with a document . Because of this it is common in GIR to separate the text indexing and analysis from the geographic indexing. GIR systems can commonly be broken down into the following stages GeoTagging , text and Geographic indexing, data storage, geographic relevance ranking wrt a geographic query and browsing results commonly with a map interface . GIR systems GIR involves extracting and resolving the meaning of locations in unstructured text. This is known as Geoparsing .
