Carteret was appointed assistant governor of the Albemarle colony by the Lords Proprietor in 1664. He was related to GeorgeCarteret , one of the Proprietors, and was the brother of Philip Carteret Governor Philip Carteret . After Gov. Samuel Stephens North Carolina Samuel Stephens died in late 1669, the governor s council named Carteret acting governor. He seems to have been appointed to the post permanently by the Lords Proprietor in 1670 and then left for England in 1672 to talk to the Proprietors about discontent in the colony. He appointed John Jenkins governor John Jenkins as his deputy, to act in his place, but Carteret never returned to the colony. Sir Philip Carteret Kt FRS 1641 &ndash 1672 , was son of Sir GeorgeCarteret . Philip was elected Fellow of the Royal Society on the 15th February 1665. He married Jemima Montagu, daughter of Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich , in an arranged marriage on 31 July 1665. Samuel Pepys had a hand in the marriage and wrote of it at some length in his diary. Jemima had only known of Philip some fourteen days before their marriage.
