  1. George Frederick Handel (Roubiliac)

Image HandelVA.jpg thumb Handel, 1738, Louis Fran ois Roubiliac 1702 1762 V&A Museum no. A.3&A 1965 This sculpture of composer George Frideric Handel 1685 1759 is by Louis Fran ois Roubiliac 1702 1762 . It was commissioned by the impresario Jonathan Tyers for his famous pleasure gardens at Vauxhall. Handel is shown in the guise of Orpheus , holding a lyre. Despite the classical allusion, he wears informal contemporary dress a soft cap, a long shirt open at the neck, a full loose gown, and slippers, one of which lies beneath his right foot. His post is also casual. He is seated cross legged, leaning on a pile of bound scores of his works, including Alexander s Feast Handel Alexander s Feast which was completed the same month the statue was finished. The statue is unprecedented, for not only was the sitter portrayed with startling informality, but it was the first life size marble depicting a living artist. Until this date such public statues were erected only for monarchs, noblemen or military leaders. Roubiliac was a native of France, although his known surviving work was executed in England. Handel is his earliest known independent sculpture. When it went on display in Vauxhall Gardens in 1738 it proved an immediate success, helping to establish Roubiliac as one of the leading sculptors in England. Roubiliac was trained in Lyon, later working in Dresden under a leading Baroque sculpture, Balthasar Permoser 1651 1732 , and then studying in Paris before moving to London in about 1730. All his known surviving works were executed in Britain. He specialised in portrait busts and funerary monuments, and was renowned for his handling of marble, particularly his creation of subtle surface textures. Franz Liszt composed his transcription music transcription of the Sarabande and Chaconne from George Frideric Handel Handel s opera Almira for piano solo List of compositions by Franz Liszt S.1 S.350 S.181 in 1879 for his England English piano student Walter Bache to play at a Handel festival in England. The Almira transcription is noted by critics as one of the most striking of Liszt s late concert arrangements as well as his only setting of a baroque piece from Late works Liszt his late period . Liszt s decision to set Handel was probably due at least in part to please British audiences, for whom Handel was still the preeminent national composer and before whom Bache would likely appear. ref name baker103 Baker, 103. ref Nevertheless, the choice of subject matter was surprising, not only by being Handel instead of Johann Sebastian Bach Bach but also from being taken from a Handel opera which was virtually ignored at the time. ref name how7 Howard, 7. ref In his most recent baroque transcription prior to Almira , that of Bach s Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542 Fantasie and Fugue in G Minor BWV 542 dating from 1867, Liszt follows the original almost exactly. 1. Germanico (Handel)

Orphan date November 2011 Refimprove date January 2012 Italic title Germanico is an opera in two acts, to a libretto of unknown authorship, which is ascribed to George Frideric Handel on the sole source, a copyist s manuscript in the library of the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence . The ascription to Handel is in the same hand that copied the music, suggesting it was contemporary with the writing of the score. It was discovered in 2007 by the conductor and scholar Ottaviano Tenerani ref http www.sonymasterworks.eu germanico microsite about.html Germanico at Sony Masterworks ref and has been recorded by Deutsche Harmonia Mundi EAN 886978604521 . The work appears to be authentic and to date from the earliest phase of Handel s sojourn in Italy, probably around 1708, leading to claims that it was Handel s first Italian opera. Despite the division into two acts, the work is described on the manuscript as a Serenata , and it lacks the drama of convcentional opera seria . Instead it is a work of rejoicing and prophecy, based around the historical figure of Germanicus Caesar and his victory over the German chieftain Arminius . Another character is Germanico s wife Agrippina the Elder interestingly they were the parents of Agrippina the Younger , who is the central protagonist of Handel s later Italian opera Agrippina opera Agrippina of 1710. Handel set a libretto by John Arbuthnot and Alexander Pope after the Esther drama Old Testament drama by Jean Racine . It is a short 1 hr. 40 min. work compared to Handel s later oratorios. The work was originally composed in about 1718, but was heavily revised into a full oratorio in 1732. ref name Grove2001Vol10Page784 NewGrove2001 Handel, George Frideric Anthony Hicks x 784 ref Masque 1718 Somewhat surprisingly for an oratorio, the work was originally staged or semi staged. It began as a masque HWV 50a , composed early in Handel s English career, and before the body of his success as an opera composer. It was first composed and performed, probably, at Cannons house Cannons , where the James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos Duke of Chandos employed Handel in 1718 as resident composer writing for his patron s singers and small orchestra. Little is known about this first version of Esther . It had a few other private performances but otherwise remained untouched for more than a decade thereafter. Oratorio 1732 In 1731, Handel had different needs since public tastes were changing. London s most famous and popular composer of Italian operas was finding the enthusiasm of his audience for the genre to be waning. He returned to Esther, revised it, and presented an expanded oratorio version HWV 50b in a public premiere at the King s Theatre in the Haymarket on 2 May 1732. 1. Deborah (Handel)

Handel oratorios Deborah HWV 51 is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel . It was one of Handel s very early oratorios and was based on a libretto by Samuel Humphreys. It received its premiere performance at the King s Theatre in London on 17 March 1733. The story of the oratorio takes place in a single day and is based on the Biblical stories found in 4 and 5 Book of Judges Judges . The Israelites have been subjugated for 20 years by the Canaanites , when the prophetess Deborah foretells the death of the Canaanite commander Sisera at the hands of a woman. The Israelite commander Barak leads them into battle against the Canaanites and they come out victorious because Jael, wife of a friend of Sisera, assassinated him during the battle. Celebration ensues. The commemoration was organized by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich ref GroveOnline 4th Earl of Sandwich William Weber November 19 2006 ref and the Concert of Antient Music and took the form of a series of concerts of Handel s music, given in the Abbey by vast numbers of singers and instrumentalists. Thomas Morell , based on the story of Jephtha in Book of Judges Judges Chapter 11 and Jephthas sive votum Jeptha or the Vow 1554 by George Buchanan humanist George Buchanan . Whilst writing Jephtha, Handel was increasingly troubled by his gradual loss of sight, and this proved to be his last oratorio. ref R. A. Streatfield, Handel Kessinger Publishing, p. 322 ref In the autograph score, at the end of the chorus How dark, O Lord, are thy decrees he wrote Reached here on 13 February 1751, unable to go on owing to weakening of the sight of my left eye. The story revolves around Jephtha s rash promise to the Almighty that if he is victorious, he will sacrifice the first creature he meets on his return. He is met by his beloved daughter Iphis. Unlike the original Biblical story, an angel intervenes to stop the sacrifice, and Iphis only needs to dedicate her life to the Lord. In contrast, the Biblical story strongly implies that her father chose to sacrifice her, but a short reprieve is arranged, after which Iphis dutifully returns and was killed. Scholars disagree regarding whether he actually sacrificed her or if, as the oratorio relates, she was then dedicated to the Lord and required to observe ... on biblical subjects was forbidden in Great Britain at the time the work was premiered.
