He studied at Galway grammar school and at Queens College Galway . He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin Trinity College , Dublin with a Bachelor of Arts B.A. in 1864, an Masters degree M.A. in 1871, a Bachelors degree B.D. in 1881, and a Doctor of Divinity D.D. in 1886. Stokes was vicar of All Saints, in Newtown Park , Dublin, from 1868&ndash 1898. In 1880 he became assistant to the Regius Professor of Divinity, and in 1883 became Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Trinity College, Dublin. He trained in London and travelled in Germany and Italy. Most of his designs were for Roman Catholic buildings, including churches, convents and schools. His first outstanding work was the Church of St Clare, Liverpool . He also designed country houses and around 20 telephone exchanges. In 1919 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects , having served as their president from 1910 to 1912.
