GeorgePhillips Odom, Jr born 1941 is an American artist and amateur geometer, who is primarily known for his work on the golden ratio math Phi math . Life and work Odom garnered some recognition early in his career for his light machines made from fibre optics, that he exhibited at the Knoll International Gallery in Manhattan in the 1960s. Later his career faltered somewhat and he could not repeat his early success. Odom suffered from depressions which ultimately culminated in a suicide attempt and a subsequential hospitalization at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center in Poughkeepsie, New York Poughkeepsie , where he became a permanent resident since the early 1980s. ref name roberts ref name schattschneider File Odom.svg thumb upright 1.2 center problem E2007 Odom, 1983 center br center math tfrac AB BC tfrac AC AB Phi math center Odom became interested in geometry after visiting an exhibition by Buckminster Fuller in the 1960s. This led to longtime correspondence with Coxeter and another mathematician father Wenniger, a monk from Minnesota, that spanned over several decades. The two mathematicians became one of Odom s few remaining regular contacts to outside world, after he had moved to the Hudson River Psychiatric Center , where he led a rather isolated life otherwise. Their correspondence was not only about mathematical topics, but it comprised matters of philosophy, psychology, religion and world affairs as well. In mathematics Odom was particularly interested in various geometric shapes and the golden ratio. About the BOND database software Bond disambiguation Bond orphan date June 2010 BOND Building Object Network Databases started development in late 2000 as a rapid application development tool for the GNOME Desktop by Treshna Enterprises . Its aim was to fill a gap that traditional Microsoft Windows applications like Borland Delphi , Microsoft Access and Visual Basic filled on the Windows desktop, but targeted for the Linux environment. Its goal was to allow developers to quickly build database forms in Extensible Markup Language XML for backend SQL databases. It has been employed extensively by Treshna Enterprises to develop applications such as PayMaster an opensource payroll application and GymMaster a commercial gym management application . Description It uses PostgreSQL as its backend database and GTK as its front end. Windows and HTML driven front ends are also available. While it initially worked closely with Glade Interface Designer Glade and the Gnome Desktop, newer versions have focused on more web oriented with Ajax programming AJAX driven Widget computing widgets . The Glade Extensible Markup Language XML format was abandoned a number of years ago and a new XML schema was developed to be more flexible with the range of data required for storing database information. BOND makes use of BONDDB which serves as a layer between the BOND API and the PostgreSQL backend. In the future, BOND aims to be a free open source solution that allows users to quickly create their own databases from scratch without being a skilled programmer or DBA. Arthur Angel Phillips 1900 1985 , generally known as A. A. Phillips , was an Australia n writer, critic and teacher, best known for coining the term Cultural cringe Cultural Cringe in his pioneering essay The Cultural Cringe , which set the early terms for postcolonial post colonial theory in Australia. He was educated at the Universities of University of Melbourne Melbourne and Oxford University Oxford , and later taught at Wesley College, Melbourne Wesley College in Melbourne . The Cultural Cringe was first published in the Melbourne cultural affairs journal Meanjin . It explored ingrained feelings of inferiority that local intellectuals struggled against, and which were most clearly pronounced in the Australian theatre, music, art and letters. Phillips pointed out that the public widely assumed that anything produced by local dramatists, actors, musicians, artists and writers was necessarily deficient when compared against the works of the British and European counterparts. The only ways local arts professionals could build themselves up in public esteem was either to follow overseas fashions, or, more often, to spend a period of time working in Britain. In some professions this attitude even affected employment opportunities, with only those who had worked in London being treated as worthy of appointment or promotion. Thus the cultural cringe brought about over the early to mid 20th century a pattern of temporary residence in Britain for so many young talented Australians across a broad range of fields, from the arts to the sciences. Refimprove date December 2008 The Bond albedo , named after the American astronomer GeorgePhillipsBond 1825 1865 , who originally proposed it, is the fraction of power physics power in the total electromagnetic radiation incident on an astronomical body that is scattered back out into space. It takes into account all wavelengths at all Phase angle astronomy phase angles . It is an important quantity for characterizing a planetary body s energy balance. For objects in the Solar System, the relevant weighting of each wavelength is proportional to the sunlight solar power spectrum . Visible light is a major contribution because over 40 of solar output is in this range. Like most albedo s, the Bond albedo is a value between 0 and 1. Because bodies in the outer Solar System are always observed at very low phase angles from the Earth, the only reliable data for measuring their Bond albedo comes from spacecraft. The Bond albedo was originally defined for spherical bodies, but is also applicable for irregular objects. Phase integral The Bond albedo A is related to the geometric albedo p by the expression math A p q frac math where q is termed the phase integral and is given in terms of the directional scattered flux I into phase angle averaged over all wavelengths and azimuthal angles as math q 2 int 0 pi frac I alpha I 0 sin alpha , d alpha. math The phase angle is the angle between the source of the radiation usually the Sun and the observing direction, and varies from zero for light scattered back towards the source, to 180 for observations looking towards the source. For example, during opposition or looking at the full moon, is very small, while backlit objects or the new moon have close to 180 . Examples The Bond albedo may be greater or smaller than the geometric ...
