George Washington Minns October 6, 1813 in Boston, Massachusetts January 14, 1895 in Brookline, Massachusetts was an United States American teacher, notable for running the Minns Evening Normal School, which was established in San Francisco, California , in 1857 in order to train teachers for the San Francisco Unified School District city s public school system . His normal school , named the California State Normal School , was the first publicly funded institution of higher learning in the state. The California State Normal School was transferred to the State of California in 1862, and is now known as San Jos State University . Al Minns 1 January 1920 &ndash 24 April 1985 , was a prominent American Lindy Hop and jazz dance r. Most famous for his film and stage performances in the 1930s and 1940s with the Harlem based Whitey s Lindy Hoppers , Minns worked throughout his life to promote the dances that he and his cohorts helped to pioneer at New York City New York s Savoy Ballroom . Minns also played a part in the revival of Lindy Hop in the 1980s, when he was invited to Stockholm in 1984 by The Rhythm Hot Shots dance company to teach the dance the way he knew it.
