GeorgeWashington Hays September 23, 1863 spaced ndash September 15, 1927 was the List of Governors of Arkansas 24th Governor of Arkansas Governor of the U.S. state of Arkansas . GeorgeWashington Hays was born in Camden, Arkansas . He attended public schools in Camden and worked as a farmer. Hays studied law at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia . Hays was probate and county judge for Ouachita County, Arkansas between 1900 and 1905. Hays served as a judge with the 13th Circuit Court from 1906 to 1913. When Governor Joseph Taylor Robinson resigned in 1913, a special election was held and Hays was elected governor. His administration focused on road improvement and enactment of a statewide prohibition law. The Hays administration also enacted a child labor law and completed construction of the new state capitol building. Hays won reelection in a contested election in 1914. Hays returned to private law practice after his term. GeorgeWashington Hays died in Little Rock, Arkansas of influenza and pneumonia and is buried in Camden, Arkansas . In New York, Washington studied under Walter Damrosch at the New York Conservatory , playing with various ensembles in the late 1920s. In 1931 he began playing with Don Redman , and gigged with Benny Carter in 1932 and Spike Hughes in 1933. In the mid 1930s he arranged for the Mills Blue Rhythm Band and worked with Red Allen and Fletcher Henderson . From 1937 to 1943 he played in Louis Armstrong s orchestra. After his tenure with Armstrong he moved to the West Coast of the United States West Coast , and played with Horace Henderson , Carter again, and Count Basie . From 1947 he led his own ensemble, playing in California and Las Vegas Strip Las Vegas . He and drummer Johnny Otis collaborated often, and in 1960 Washington worked with Joe Darensbourg . He did freelance work as a player and arranger later in his life. Washington should not be confused with any of several other musicians named GeorgeWashington, including a bassist who played with John Lee Hooker . Born in Boonville, Missouri , Lee was the older brother of pianist singer Julia Lee musician Julia Lee . He played in a band while serving in the United States Army Army in 1917 following this he sang in a vocal quartet, and in 1920 he formed an ensemble of his own. With his sister as one of the group s members, he was a regular player at Lyric Hall in Kansas City, Missouri Kansas City through much of the 1920s. In 1927 they recorded as an octet, with Jesse Stone on piano, for Merritt Records among the tunes was Down Home Syncopated Blues , the earliest recording of Julia Lee s voice. They recorded six tunes for Brunswick Records Brunswick in 1929. In 1933, Lee s group was absorbed into the Bennie Moten Orchestra. In 1935 he struck out on his own again he moved to Jackson, Michigan in 1940 and began managing a nightclub in Detroit in 1942. Later in the 1940s he moved to San Diego and retired from music.
