Born in Fidenza BorgoSanDonnino now Fidenza , Gerardo went to Paris to complete his studies. There, in 1248, according to Salimbene da Parma , he attempted to convince Louis IX of France not to organize the Sixth Crusade . He was a Joachimites Joachimite , a follower of he millenarianism millenarianist ideas of Joachim of Fiore Gioacchino da Fiore . Around 1250 Gerardo published in Paris a book entitled Introductorium in Evangelium Aeternum where he identified the Order of Justs, supposed to rule the Roman Catholic Church after the advent of the Age of the Holy Spirit, in the Franciscan order. This text was examined by a commission of Cardinal Catholicism cardinals set up by Pope Alexander IV worried about the diffusion of Joachimite theories among the Franciscans. In 1255, the council ordered the destruction of the book and in 1263 Gerardo was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. He remained in prison until his death in 1276, still refusing to recant his beliefs. Nestled in the upper reaches of the Rio Savegre, which flows west from the continental divide off the slopes of Cerro de la Muerte San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica , QERC provides a base of operations for students and researchers studying tropical montaine cloud forest ecosystems. The center was founded in 1985 through a cooperative agreement between SNU and Efrain Chacon, a founding settler of the San Gerardo de Dota community, as a component of the work of SNU faculty member emeritus Leo Finkenbinder. Finkenbinder and his network of colleagues established a cloud forest research program that focused on introducing undergraduate students to the tropical cloud forest ecosystem of the area, which included an easily observed population of resplendent quetzal and a human community with ecological sensitivities and a strong commitment to developing the human landscape in ways that fostered habitat preservation for the quetzal and other cloud forest species.
