Gertrude Cosgrove was a staunch companion to her husband in his political career their elder son, Robert, was killed in 1940 while serving with the Royal Air Force. Gertrude Cosgrove was treasurer of the West Hobart women s branch of the Australian Labor Party and active in the Australian Comforts Fund, the Country Women s Association , the Australian Red Cross and the Victoria League . From 1916 she worked devotedly for the Elizabeth Street State School, Hobart. Her leisure activities included gardening and crochet. She was created a Order of the British Empire Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire on 1 January 1947 and invested at Buckingham Palace by King George VI in 1949. Refimprove date June 2007 Gertrude of Hackeborn 1223 1292 was the Abbess of the Cistercian convent of Helfta , near Eisleben in modern Germany. She was a member of the Hackeborn dynasty and a sister of St. Mechtilde . At a young age she ented the Cistercian convent of Roderdorf , where she was elected abbess in 1251 at the age of only nineteen. She founded the convent of Hederleben in 1253 with the help of her two brothers, Albert and Louis, but it suffered from a lack of water, so she received the castle of Helpeda Helfta and its surrounding land from them and moved her community there in 1258. While she was abbess, the convent of Helfta became famous across the Holy Roman Empire for its practices of asceticism and mysticism. Gertrude required her nuns to be educated in the liberal arts , but most importantly in the Bible . She was considered a model abbess, most especially in her behavior during the year long illness that took her life. Gertrude of Hackeborn is not to be confused with St. Gertrude the Great . The abbess never wrote anything, nor did she received any relevations from God or become canonized . Gertrude the Great was born over twenty years after the her, and lived as an ordinary nun in the Helfa convent. October 1227 13 August 1297 was the daughter of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary . She became a Premonstratensian canon regular Canonesses regular canoness regular of the Abbey of Aldenberg, near Wetzlar , in the Diocese of Trier , where she spent much of her life leading the community as its abbess . She is honored as a beatification blessed of the Order. Life She was the youngest of the three children of Ludwig IV, Landgrave of Thuringia Landgraf Louis of Thuringia , and his wife St. Elizabeth of Hungary . Gertrude s father died while on his way to the Holy Land shortly before she was born, which left her mother in distress. She was scarcely two years old when her mother brought her to the Abbey of Aldenberg, where she afterwards became a canoness. In 1248, only twenty one years old, she was elected Abbess, and ruled over the monastery for forty nine years. With the inheritance she received from her uncle, Dietrich I, Margrave of Meissen , she erected a church and a poorhouse. She took personal charge of the residents of the poorhouse and led a life of extreme mortification . When Pope Nicholas IV published a crusade against the Saracens , Gertrude and her community took the Crusaders cross . In 1270, under her direction, the abbey began to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi , being one of the first to introduce this feast into Germany.
