  1. Gesta Francorum

The so called Gesta Francorum The Deeds of the Franks or in full Gesta Francorum et aliorum Hierosolimitanorum The deeds of the Franks and the other pilgrims to Jerusalem is a Latin chronicle of the First Crusade written in circa 1100 1101 by an anonymous author connected with Bohemond I of Antioch . It narrates the events of the First Crusade from the inception in November 1095 to the Battle of Ascalon in August 1099. The name of the author is unknown, but he was a member of the crusading party, either Normans Norman or Italy Italian , recruited by Bohemond I of Antioch Bohemond of Taranto in 1096 from the duchy of Apulia . His narrative of the trip to Jerusalem, initially under the leadership of Bohemond and then Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse Raymond of Toulouse , was composed and written during the journey. He had the help of a scribe who made occasional edits of his own, and thus the chronicle provides invaluable viewpoints of a knight who was not a high level leader or cleric. 1. Gesta Adalberonis

italictitle The Gesta Adalberonis or Gesta Alberonis Deeds of Albero is a biography of Albero de Montreuil Adalbero, Archbishop of Trier 1131 52 , written in medieval Latin prose by Balderic of Florennes. There is also a Gesta Alberonis metrica anonyma , an anonymous biography of Albero s life down to 1145, written in hexameter s. Balderic was born in Florennes and became a scholar in Paris , where he first met Albero in 1147. The archbishop invited him to come head the school at the cathedral of Trier , and he later served as provost of the college of Saint Simeon housed in the Porta Nigra . He wrote his life of Albero shortly after the latter s death. He himself disappears from the record after 1163 and presumably died around that time. He was praised for his scholarlship by Wibald . The Gesta s account of Albero s youth is mostly legendary, but his years as bishop are reliably covered, especially those portions describing that to which Baleric was an eyewitness. The work is biography and, although the author heeps praise on the subject, it is not hagiography . 1. Gesta Romanorum

Gesta Romanorum , a Latin collection of anecdotes and tales, was probably compiled about the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th. It still possesses a two fold literary interest, first as one of the most popular books of the time, and secondly as the source, directly or indirectly, of later literature, in Geoffrey Chaucer , John Gower , Giovanni Boccaccio , Thomas Hoccleve , William Shakespeare , and others. Of its authorship nothing certain is known. It is conjecture to associate it either with the name of Helinandus or with that of Petrus Berchorius Pierre Bercheure . It is debated whether it took its rise in England, Germany or France. Content The work was evidently intended as a manual for preachers, and was probably written by one of the clerical profession. 1. Dei gesta per Francos

Dei gesta per Francos Deeds of God through the Franks is a narrative of the First Crusade by Guibert of Nogent written between 1107 and 1108. Traditionally it has not been well received by scholars, but recent translators and editors such as Levin 1997 and Rubenstein 2002 have shown it to contain important original material. Dei gesta was a radical departure for the type of literary work for Guibert who had previously worked on theological tracts. He decided to undertake a history of the crusade, he says, after he read an anonymous eyewitness account called Gesta Francorum . In the eyes of Guibert this work was rough and simple and frequently left the reader stunned with its insipid vacuity Dei gesta , preface . Guibert felt a much higher standard of grammar and diction was needed. There were some who believed it was best to leave the writing of history to those who had actually seen the events themselves, and thus were critical of Guibert s project. Guibert himself had said as much about 10 years earlier in a preachers manual. However he justified the book by saying if someone objects to me that I have not seen, he can not object that I have not heard&mdash for I truly believe that hearing is, in a way, almost as good as seeing. Dei gesta , preface . Guibert personally knew crusaders, had grown up with crusaders, and had talked with them about their memories and experiences on their return. 1. Gesta Regum Britanniae

The Gesta Regum Britanniae lang la Deeds of the Kings of Britain is a Latin epic poetry epic written at some time between 1235 and 1254, and attributed to a Breton monk, William of Rennes. The Gesta is fundamentally a versification of Geoffrey of Monmouth s Historia Regum Britanniae in Latin epic hexameter s. It retains Geoffrey s overall sequence and structure, but expands upon those elements and stories which had the greatest dramatic potential, while treating other sections more cursorily. William omits the Prophecies of Merlin section of the Historia , as Wace did in his earlier Roman de Brut . William may have read Geoffrey s Vita Merlini , but otherwise does not intrude any elements of the by then very copious Arthurian legend into his adaptation of the Historia . The form of the Gesta was inspired by Walter of Ch tillon s Alexandreis . It is divided into ten books, each of which is prefaced by a terse summary of its contents, also in verse. The entire poem is 4,923 lines long, each book being about 500 lines in length. 1. Gesta pontificum Anglorum

italictitle The Gesta Pontificum Anglorum or Deeds of the English Bishops was a medieval literary work by William of Malmesbury covering the historical development of Church of England dioceses history of the English episcopate . The work was in Medieval Latin and was composed between 1118 and 1125. Although William s concurrent work, the Gesta Regum Anglorum , drew heavily on the Anglo Saxon Chronicle for both structure and content, in the Gesta Pontificum the author had no ready guide and had to set up a new structure for the work. This he did by arranging his material by diocese, starting with Archdiocese of Canterbury Canterbury , and grouping the dioceses by the ancient Anglo Saxon kingdoms they had belonged to. Within the description and history of each diocese, William wrote about the bishops and monasteries, plus any additional interesting information. ref name Church17 Barlow English Church 1066 1154 pp. 17 18 ref The Gesta Pontificum , in the manner of many chroniclers continuations, begins where Bede s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum left off, and ends at William s own time. In Gesta Danorum , Siward , Sywardus, Synardus , was an ancient king in Geats G taland , who had a daughter named Alf and Alfhild Alfhild , who became a legendary Viking pirate. To protect his daughter from unworthy suitors, Siward had her chamber guarded by a lizard and a snake.
