Chephirah is one of four towns named in Book of Joshua Joshua 9 17 along with Gibeon ancient city Gibeon , Beeroth north Beeroth , and Kiriath Jearim . The context is a story explaining a peace treaty between the Israelites and the natives of this region. Chephirah appears again in 18 26 as one of the towns assigned to the Tribe of Benjamin . No other noteworthy event occurred at Chephirah for hundreds of years until it was named again in the parallel passages of Book of Ezra Ezra 2 25, Book of Nehemiah Nehemiah 7 29, & apocryphal 1 Esdras 5 19. Here the context is not of the location, but of the families who formerly resided there prior to being taken captive to Babylon . The people of Chephirah are grouped together with those of Beeroth and Kirjath Jearim, but the Gibeonites comprise a separately numbered family. Valley of Rephaite Rephaim lang he , Emeq Rephaim bibleverse Joshua 15 8 NIV bibleverse Joshua 18 16 NIV , R.V. . A valley descending southwest from Emek Refaim Jerusalem to the Valley of Elah below, it is an ancient route from the coastal plain to the Judean Hills , probably named after the legendary race of giants. Biblical story When David became king over all History of ancient Israel and Judah Israel , the Philistines , judging that he would now become their uncompromising enemy, made a sudden attack upon Hebron , compelling David to retire from it. He sought refuge in the hold at Adullam bibleverse 2 Samuel 5 17 22 NIV , and the Philistines took up their position in the valley of Rephaim , on the west and south west of Jerusalem . Thus all communication between Bethlehem and Jerusalem was intercepted. While David and his army were encamped here, there occurred that incident narrated in bibleverse 2 Samuel 5 17 25 NIV . Having obtained divine direction, David led his army against the Philistines, and gained a complete victory over them. The scene of this victory was afterwards called Baal perazim . A second time, however, the Philistines rallied their forces in this valley bibleverse 2 Samuel 5 22 NIV . Again warned by a divine saying, David led his army to Gibeon ancient city Gibeon , and attacked the Philistines from the south, inflicting on them another severe defeat, and chasing them with great slaughter to Gezer q.v. . Adonizedek variously transliterated as Adoni zedec or Adoni Zedek in Hebrew language Hebrew , Adoni Tzedek was, according to the Book of Joshua , king of Jerusalem at the time of the Israelite invasion of Canaan bibleverse Joshua 10 1 3 NIV . His name means my lord is righteousness in Hebrew. Adonizedek led a coalition of five of the neighboring Amorite rulers Hoham king of Hebron , and unto Piram king of Jarmuth , and unto Japhia king of Lachish , and unto Debir king of Eglon, Canaan Eglon in resisting the invasion, but the allies were defeated at Gibeon ancient city Gibeon , and suffered at Beth horon , not only from their pursuers, but also from a great hail storm. The five allied kings took refuge in a cave at Makkedah and were imprisoned there until after the battle, when Joshua commanded that they be brought before him whereupon they were brought out, humiliated, and put to death. According to the Midrash , the name Adoni zedek is translated as Master of Zedek that is, of Jerusalem, the city of righteousness Genesis Rabbah xliii. 6 . Identification with Abdi Heba The author of the article for the Easton s Bible Dictionary states that amongst the Amarna letters are some letters from Adonizedek to the Pharaoh of Egypt , which add to the history recorded in Josh. 10. However, the only king of Jerusalem mentioned in this archive is one Abdi Heba whose name translates as servant of Heba , who is said to have succeeded Lab ayu . Six of his letters to the king of Egypt EA 285 290 are included in the Amarna letters , and he is mentioned in a seventh EA 280 . Perhaps the Dictionary author saw how Abdi Heba complained of the raids by the Habiru , who at the time were unquestioningly identified with the Hebrews , and forced the identification.
