The Froebel Gifts lang de Fr belgaben are a range of educational materials designed by Friedrich Fr bel . They were first used in the original Kindergarten at Bad Blankenburg . Fr bel advocated the importance of free play in childhood . Each gift Gabe was designed to be given to a child to provide material for the child s self directed activity. These Gifts are a series of activity based playthings ranging from simple sphere shaped objects, through to geometric wooden blocks and more advanced Gifts pertaining to sewing, cutting, weaving and the modelling of objects in clay. Ottilie de Liagre in a letter to Fr bel in 1844 observed that playing with the Froebel Gifts empowers children to be lively and free, but people can degrade it into a mechanical routine. Realising how the Gifts were eventually misused by Kindergarten teachers who followed after Froebel, it is important to consider what Froebel expected the Gifts to achieve. He envisaged that the Gifts will teach the child to use his or her environment as an educational aid secondly, that they will give the child an indication of the connection between human life and life in nature and finally that they will create a bond between the adult and the child who play with them Joachim Liebschner on page 82 in his book, A Child s Work Freedom and Guidance in Froebel s Educational Theory and Practice Frank Lloyd Wright was given a set of the Froebel blocks at about age nine, and in his autobiography cited them indirectly in explaining that he learned the geometry of architecture in kindergarten play, ref cite book title Frank Lloyd Wright the Lost Years, 1910 1922 A Study of Influence last Alofsin first Anthony publisher University of Chicago Press year 1993 isbn 0 226 01366 9 page 359 ref writing For several years I sat at the little ... 3 page 205 ref Froebel Gifts remain popular today in Korea and Japan in early childhood education . unreferenced date November 2011 Gifts of an Eagle is non fiction book written by Kent Durden and published by Simon and Schuster in 1972. The book details the story of Kent and his father, Ed Durden , who raised and filmed a golden eagle, named Lady, for 16 years. A documentary film was made by Kent of the book using original 16mm footage from the 50 s to the 70 s showing the story of Lady and Ed. The film was released on DVD in 2009. big Lady and Ed big In 1955 Ed Durden got a grant from the Fish and Wildlife Department to capture a golden eaglett to film and study for educational purposes. A close bond developed between Ed and Lady. There were many incidents that showed the strong smarts and personality of Lady. For example after one incident when Kent held her down while they had to trim her claws, Lady never liked him again and would dive on him whenever she was out flying free and Kent showed up. Ed found this endlessly amusing and loved getting a good shot of Lady diving while Kent ran for cover. Lady laid eggs that were infertile. Wanting her to have the experience of motherhood, Ed replaced the eggs with fertile geese eggs all her could find at the time . She accepted them as hers and nurtured the eggs until fluffy yellow baby geese broke out of those eggs. Lady cared for them as she would her own, even though there were some very curious odd things about these eagles . Lady eventually got to raise eaglets. The amazing footage that Ed got the morning she first chirped at the breaking eagle egg was the first time an eagle being born was captured on film. When Lady was on the nest and Ed would come into her cage, she would get up to leave, leaving the eggs to Ed to keep warm.
