    Unreferenced date December 2006 Giulio Cybo or Cibo died May 18, 1548 was an Italian noble from Genoa . He was the son of Riccarda Malaspina family Malaspina , duchess of Massa and Carrara and Lorenzo Cibo di Ferentillo who changed his name in Cibo Malaspina , and a nephew of Pope Innocent VIII . Around 1547 he acquired the duchy of Massa and Carrara by his mother by a payment of 40,000 golden ducat coin ducat s. When he found unable to pay the whole sum, he asked for help to his relative Andrea Doria , admiral and effective ruler of Genoa. Giulio had in march 1546 married Peretta Doria 1526 1591 , daughter of Tommaso and sister of Giannettino Doria . When Doria refused, Cybo entered a conspiracy to oust the Admiral from the rule in Genoa , and replace him with a French protectorate. Cybo was to help Ottobuono Fieschi sixteenth century Ottobuono Fieschi and other Genoese exiled in Venice to enter the city and kill Doria, the Spanish ambassador and other members of the Doria party. With the help of the pope and Piero Strozzi , the revolt should spread to the whole Italy, with the objective to expel the Spaniards from the country. The plot was however discovered before its beginning and Cybo was arrested in Pontremoli . Despite the intervention of Cosimo I de Medici in his favour, he was executed in the May 1548.     Giulio I Cybo Malaspina 1525 18 May 1547 was an Italian nobleman, who was marquisate of Massa marquis of Massa and signoria di Carrara lord of Carrara from 1546 until 1547. Born in Rome , he was the son of Ricciarda Malaspina and Lorenzo Cybo . His mother was the heir of the state of Massa and Carrara , which Giulio bought from her when he came of age in 1546. As he was actually without money, Giulio asked a grant from his wife s powerful relative, the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria , then at the service of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor Emperor and King of Spain Charles V with whom the petty Massese state had allied so far . After Doria refused, Giulio set a plot against him together with Ottobono Fieschi and other Genoese refugees, also backed by the Strozzi family of republic of Florence Florence and Pope Paul III . However, the plot was discovered and Giulio was arrested at Pontremoli . Despite an attempt to save him from his cousin Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I of Tuscany , he was beheaded in Milan . His body was buried in the Cathedral of Massa . Born in Naples , he was married for diplomatic reasons to Lorenzo il Magnifico Lorenzo de Medici s daughter, Maddalena di Lorenzo de Medici Maddalena de Medici . He was therefore brother in law to Pope Leo X Giovanni de Medici . Despite his exceeding passion for card playing, he received from his father important positions in the Papal States governor of Rome 1488 , the fiefs of Cerveteri and Anguillara 1490 and the title of Count of the Lateran Palace . In 1490 he attempted to steal the Papal treasure. Two years later, after Innocent VIII s death, he moved to Tuscany and Genoa , but could return to Rome thanks to the election of the more favourable Pope Julius II 1503 . History The painting is mentioned by late Renaissance art biographer Giorgio Vasari as among those that Parmigianino executed during his sojourn in Rome . Lorenzo Cybo was a captain of the papal guards and a brother of cardinal Innocenzo Cybo , and at the time was 23 24, as specified in an inscription in the lower part of the painting Laurentius Cybo Marchio Massa atque Comes Ferentilli anno M.D.XXIII . The date 1523 is generally considered to be a mistake of the unknown man who added the inscription, since at the time Parmigianino was still in Emilia region of Italy Emilia . The portrait is known since 1749, when it was part of the collections of cardinal Silvio Valenti Gonzaga , and is in fact included in a painting depicting his pictures by Giovanni Paolo Pannini . The whole collection was sold at Amsterdam in 1763 and in that occasion it was transferred to Denmark.
