Infobox image Image Krak des chevaliers04 js .jpg 300px caption The Krak des chevaliers Krak des Chevaliers , with a tall and clearly defined talus The talus is an architectural feature of some late medieval castles , especially prevalent in Crusades crusader constructions. It consists of a sloping face at the base of a Fortification fortified wall . The slope acts as an effective defensive measure in two ways. First, conventional siege equipment is less effective against a wall with a talus. Escalade Scaling ladders may be unable to reach the top of the walls and are also more easily broken due to the bending stresses caused by the angle they are forced to adopt. Siege towers cannot approach closer than the base of the talus, and their Corvus weapon gangplank may be unable to cover the horizontal span of the talus, rendering them useless. Furthermore, defenders are able to drop rocks over the walls, which will shatter on the talus, spraying a hail of Fragmentation weaponry shrapnel into any attackers massed at the base of the wall. ref cite web url http www.angelfire.com wy svenskildbiter madict.html Talus title Talus accessdate 2011 06 28 work A Dictionary of Military Architecture publisher date ref Infobox image Image Tughlaqabad fort wall.jpg 300px caption The walls of the citadel of Tughlaqabad .The walls and towers are reinforced with a solid talus. Multiple issues cleanup April 2012 unreferenced December 2009 A polygonal fort is a fortification in the style that evolved around the middle of the nineteenth century, in response to the development of powerful Shell projectile explosive shells . The complex and sophisticated designs of star fort s that preceded them were highly effective against cannon assault, but proved much less effective against the more accurate fire of rifled guns and the destructive power of explosive shells. The polygonal style of fortification is also described as a flankless fort . Many were built during the government of Lord Palmerston , and so they are also often referred to as Palmerston forts. Their low profile makes them easy to overlook. In response to the vulnerabilities of star forts, military engineers evolved a much simpler but more robust style of fortification. Even today, it remains linked to St Bartholomew s day, 24 August, the traditional opening date. The name Schueberfouer is thought to originate from the name of the market place where it was first held the Schuedburg , today s Plateau St Esprit. For almost 450 years, it was indeed just a large market for everything from food and livestock to cloth and pottery. The fair moved to the Glacis in 1610 after the Limpertsberg wood had been removed to improve the city s fortifications. Olotoraca also spelled Olotaraca , Olotacara , or Otocara 1548 &ndash 1573 near Fort San Mateo, Florida was subchief of a Florida tribe. Biography He was the nephew of Saturiwa chief Satouriona , one of the three chiefs among whom Florida was divided at the time of Jean Ribaut s landing in 1562. At the time of the first expedition by Pedro Men ndez de Avil s , in 1565, Olotoraca served as guide to the Spaniard s, since the French had refused to lend assistance to Satouriona against his enemies, Utina Outina and Potano Potanou , the other two Florida chiefs. But the cruelties of the Spaniards soon estranged the Indians, and when Dominique de Gourgue s came to revenge Jean Ribaut they were willing to assist him. Olotoraca was instrumental in forming the alliance, and led Satouriona s 300 warriors against the Spanish people Spanish . But for him Gourgues s expedition would have failed. He guided the French people French , went to reconnoitre the position of the enemy, and in the assault on the first fort was also the first to mount the glacis , driving his Pike weapon pike through the breast of a Spanish cannon eer. Men ndez returned a few months later, and, after rebuilding Fort San Mateo, re established Spanish dominion in Florida. Olotoraca, who had succeeded Satouriona, fought to the end, murdered the Spanish missionary missionaries , and several times burned and ruined the Spanish establishments. He was at last captured and hanged. According to Gatschet , the proper form of his name is Hola&lsquo taraca , hola&lsquo ta being the title for a subchief in the Timucua language .
