They also represent openings in forests where local conditions such as avalanches, poor soils, or fire damage have created semi permanent clearings. Image Cedar glade col tn5.jpg right 250px thumb Cedar glade in Wilson County, Tennessee A cedar glade is a habitat type unique to the central eastern United States. Cedar glades occur where limestone bedrock occurs near or at the surface. The glade areas proper have very shallow soil or exposed bedrock in some areas. Because of the shallow soil and the extreme conditions created by it, trees are unable to grow in the glades. This creates a habitat more similar to the prairies hundreds of miles to the west than to the surrounding forests. Flora of the cedar glades The cedar in the name comes from the abundance of eastern redcedar Juniperus virginiana that occurs on the margins of the glades or in cracks in the bedrock where the roots can gain a foothold. Many of the characteristic plants http www.nashvillefossils.com glades pages fieldguide.html that grow in the cedar glades are endemics that occur nowhere else, or disjunct populations of plants that are widespread in the prairies of the central U.S. There are several endangered species that are endemic to the cedar glades, including the Tennessee coneflower Echinacea tennesseensis , Pyne s ground plum Astragalus bibullatus , leafy prairie clover Dalea foliosa , and lyrate bladderpod Paysonia lyrata . Threats to the cedar glades The central basin or Nashville Basin of Tennessee is one of the largest areas containing cedar glades. Because of the rapid growth of metropolitan Nashville, Tennessee Nashville and the surrounding cities of Murfreesboro, Tennessee Murfreesboro and Lebanon, Tennessee Lebanon , many of the cedar glades have been destroyed by development. File Clairiere de l Armistice Compiegne.jpg thumbnail The Glade of Armistice The Glade of the Armistice lang fr Clairi re de l Armistice is a war memorial in the Forest of Compi gne . It stands on the spot where in 1918 the Germans signed Armistice with Germany the armistice that ended World War I . During World War II, Adolf Hitler deliberately chose the same location for the French and Germans to sign the Second Armistice at Compi gne after Germany won the Battle of France . Today, Glade of the Armistice contains a statue of Ferdinand Foch and the Alsace Lorraine Memorial. History Following their victory in the Battle of France , the Germans set out to humiliate the vanquished French by forcing them to sign the Second Armistice at Compi gne in the Glade, the same place that the Germans had signed the Armistice 22 years earlier. Adolf Hitler personally visited the Glade to participate in the ceremony. William Shirer reported on his reaction to seeing the monument blockquote Through my glasses I saw the F hrer stop, glance at the Alsace Lorraine monument.... Then he read the inscription on the great granite block in the center of the clearing Here on the eleventh of November 1918 succumbed the criminal pride of the German empire . . . vanquished by the free peoples which it tried to enslave. I look for the expression on Hitler s face. I am but fifty yards from him and see him through my glasses as though he were directly in front of me. I have seen that face many times at the great moments of his life. But today It is afire with scorn, anger, hate, revenge, triumph. He steps off the monument and contrives to make even this gesture a masterpiece of contempt. He glances back at it contemptuous, angry. . . . Suddenly, as though his face were not giving quite complete expression to his feelings, he throws his whole body into harmony with his mood. He swiftly snaps his hands on his hips, arches his shoulders, plants his feet wide apart. It is a magnificent gesture of defiance ... more details
