Other uses Glimpse disambiguation GLIMPSE is a text indexing and retrieval software program originally developed at the University of Arizona by Udi Manber , Sun Wu , and Burra Gopal . A web server version called WebGlimpse is now being maintained under a pay per line licence. Neither project could be considered open source although there are some similarities. GLIMPSE stands for GLobal IMPlicit SEarch. While many text indexing schemes create quite large indexes usually around 50 of the size of the original text , a GLIMPSE created index is only 2 4 of the size of the original text. GLIMPSE uses and takes a great deal of inspiration from Agrep , which was also developed at the University of Arizona, but GLIMPSE uses a high level index whereas Agrep parses all the text each time. The basic algorithm is similar to other text indexing and retrieval engines, except that the text records in the index are huge, consisting of multiple files each. This index is searched using a boolean matching algorithm like most other text indexing and retrieval engines. After one or more of these large text records is matched, Agrep is used to actually scan for the exact text desired. While this is slower than traditional totally indexed approaches, the advantage of the smaller index is seen to be advantageous to the individual user. This approach would not work particularly well across websites, but would work reasonably well for a single site, or a single workstation. GLIMPSE is a 5 year project to investigate the controls on thinning at the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet . It is based in the Glaciology Group at the School of the Environment and Society, Swansea Swansea University University . The project is headed by Professor Tavi Murray and is funded through a Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award presented to Murray in mid 2007. Rationale Southern Greenland s margins and outlet glaciers are thinning at a dramatic rate, and this rate appears to be accelerating. These changes will have profound implications for global sea levels, ocean circulation, regional climate, and society. The acceleration in the rate of thinning represents more than simply melting, and coincides with major changes in the dynamics of outlet glaciers e.g. Rignot & Kanagaratnam 2006 . The ice sheet model s we use to predict sea level rise do not include outlet glacier dynamic processes, and consequently underestimate Greenland s sea level contribution Alley et al. 2005 . Moreover, our available records of thickness changes are not long enough to be sure whether they represent profound alterations in the ice sheet s behaviour or simply expected natural variability. GLIMPSE is building a world leading and multi disciplinary group in Swansea which collaborates with international experts to address these deficiencies. This research will place the known volume change observations in a longer temporal context, identify controls on outlet glacier dynamics, and incorporate these controls within ice sheet models. The key result will be better predictions of the future extent and behaviour of the Greenland ice sheet and therefore of future sea level rise. A Magazine was founded in 1989 by Jeff Yang , Amy Chu, Sandi Kim and Bill Yao to cover Asian American issues and culture, and grew out of a campus magazine Yang edited while an undergraduate at Harvard University . Until it ceased on February 20, 2002, it was the largest publication for English speaking Asian Americans in the United States, with bimonthly readership exceeding 200,000 in North America. Though well known and influential in the Asian American community, it was never profitable in its 13 year existence. In November 1999, it obtained US 4.5 million in venture capital funding, and the company was renamed aMedia , reflecting a branching out into Web publishing. Unfortunately, this change came right as the Dot com bubble dot com boom was turning to bust.
