A Gnutellacrawler is a software program used to gather statistic information on the gnutella file sharing network, such as the number of users, the market share of different clients and the geographical distribution of the userbase. Early crawlers used the Ping Pong messages to discover hosts connected to the network. Although this method is still usable, it is too slow to capture enough data for a topological overview of the gnutella network as it requires initiating full gnutella connections this involves several roundtrips to perform the header processing. An extension has been added to the gnutella protocol to allow crawlers to quickly access ultrapeer s. Right now, there is no public accessible crawler online on the gnutella network, since the last one hosted by Lime Wire LLC has been taken down. Gnutella2 G2 also supports crawlers for the gain of statistical data such as the network size or the network composition clients, versions, usernames and usercountries . ref name Gnutella2 crawler cite web url http crawler.trillinux.org history.html title Gnutella2 network crawler g2panthera publisher dcat accessdate 2006 08 22 ref Right now, there is only one crawler existing on the G2 network, called http crawler.trillinux.org g2paranha . It is designed to sink to the bottom of a body of water, where it moves about using traction against the bottom with wheel s or tread s. It is usually tethered to a surface ship by cables providing power, control, video, and lifting cababilities but this is not required. Such devices have been proposed for use in recovering deep seabead minerals, such as manganese nodules . These also have been considered since the late 1960s for use in offshore oil exploration and production in extremely deep water, but practical devices have used other technologies from the sea surface, such as moored barges and tension leg platform s. A focused crawler or topical crawler is a web crawler that attempts to download only web page s that are relevant to a pre defined topic or set of topics.
