Image Nemrod 2hose regulator.jpg thumb Nemrod double hose diving regulator made in the 1980s. Its mouthpiece can be strapped in. In scuba set breathing set s, a mouthpiece is a part that the user grips in his mouth , to make a watertight seal between the breathing set and his mouth. It is composed of a short flattened oval tube that goes in between the lip s, with on its free end a flange that fits between the lips and the tooth and gingiva gums . On the flange there are two projections with enlarged ends, which are gripped between the teeth. Most sport diving scuba sets use a mouthpiece rather than a fullface mask . In many industrial breathing sets and a few scuba sets e.g. the Siebe Gorman Salvus , and a 1980s model of diving regulator Twin hose double hose diving regulator made by Nemrod , the mouthpiece also has an outer rubber flange that fits outside the lips and extends into two straps that fasten together behind the neck. That makes the mouthpiece more airtight and watertight, and helps to keep the mouthpiece in if the user lets his lips or jaws get slack through unconsciousness or absent mindedness or being preoccupied with work. A mouthpiece in the mouth gag prevents clear speech as a result, many work divers, and many people who use a breathing set on land e.g. firefighter s , use a fullface mask . In breathing sets with two wide hoses In a loop of wide Breathing tube breathing apparatus breathing tubes like in a Diving regulator Twin hose twin hose aqualung or some rebreather s, the word mouthpiece is sometimes taken to mean the whole of the rigid assembly between the two flexible tubes. Godel mouthpiece In the 1960s a mouthpiece assembly of this sort for a double hose Aqua lung aqualung , called a Godel mouthpiece was made, which had a Snorkel swimming snorkel attached, and a fullface mask Straps firmly fasten it to the head valve so the diver could breathe from the aqualung or from the snorkel . Effective theory has two distinct meanings. In science An effective theory is a scientific theory which proposes to describe a certain set of Experiment observations , but explicitly without the claim or implication that the mechanism employed in the theory has a direct counterpart in the actual causes of the observed phenomena to which the theory is fitted. I.e. the theory proposes to model a certain effect , without proposing to adequately model any of the causes which contribute to the effect. Thus, an effective field theory is a theory which describes phenomena in solid state physics , notably the BCS theory of superconduction , which treats vibrations of the solid state lattice as a field physics field i.e. without claiming that there is reality really a field , with its own field quanta, called phonon s. Such effective particles derived from effective fields are also known as quasiparticle s. In a certain sense, quantum field theory , and any other currently known physical theory, could be described as effective , as in being the low energy limit of an as yet unknown Theory of Everything . ref c.f. e.g. Ion Olimpiu Stamatescu, Erhard Seiler, Approaches to fundamental physics an assessment of current theoretical ideas , Lecture notes in physics, vol. 721, Springer, 2007, ISBN 9783540711155, p. 47 ref In mathematics An effective theory is a formal theory whose set of axioms is recursively enumerable , that is, it is theoretically possible to write a computer program that, if allowed to run forever, would output the axioms of the theory one at a time and not output anything else. Godel s first incompleteness theorem demonstrates that such a theory cannot at the same time be complete, consistent, and include elementary arithmetic.
