Gormflaith ingen Murchada Pronunciation needed was born in Naas , County Kildare , Ireland , around 960. She was the daughter of Murchad mac Finn, King of Leinster , sister of his successor, Mael M rdha mac Murchada , and widow of Olaf Cuaran , the Viking king of Dublin and York . The main source of her life history is the Cogadh Gaedhil re Gallaibh . She was also the mother of King Sigtrygg Silkbeard of Dublin. Gormflaith married M el Sechnaill mac Domnaill after Olaf s death, but she is best known for being the third wife of Brian Boru Brian Bor , the High King of Ireland . She was the mother of Donnchad, who succeeded Brian as King of Munster. In 999, Brian defeated Mael Mordha and Sigtrygg Silkbeard at the Battle of Glen Mama . To negotiate peace, Brian married one of his daughters to Sigtrygg and took Gormflaith as wife. According to Nj l s saga , which refers to her as Kormlo she was endowed with great beauty... but was utterly wicked. She was later divorced by Brian, and she began engineering opposition to the High King. She prompted Sigtrygg into gathering support from Vikings outside Ireland, most notably Sigurd the Stout Earl Sigurd of Orkney and Brodir and Ospak of Man Brodir of the Isle of Man . The conflict she caused came to its climax at the Battle of Clontarf , at which Brian was killed. Brian s forces were victorious, however, and neither Gormflaith nor Sigtrygg were killed, as they were safe behind the walls of Dublin. She died in 1030. See also Gormflaith ... Gormflaith was married first to King Cormac mac Cuilenn in of Munster , who had taken vows of celibacy as a bishop. The marriage was not said to be cosumated. MacShamhran p.  203 writes Difficulties relating to this marriage leave it probable that it is a fiction created when memory of Gormlaith became assimilated to the sovereignty goddess who had three husbands. Queen of Leinster Cormac was killed at the battle of Bealach Mugna in 908 by an alliance of Flann Sinna of Kingship of Tara Tara and Cerball mac Muirec in , King of Leinster . Flann afterwards married Gormflaith to Cerball, who is alleged according to a text in the Book of Leinster to have abused her so much that she was forced to return to her father at least once. M el Muire died 1021 was List of Irish queens and consorts Queen of Ireland , being actually styled so in the Annals of Clonmacnoise . ref Cite AClon 1014 1021 , p. 170 ref The wife of M el Sechnaill mac Domnaill , High King of Ireland , she was a daughter of Amla b Cuar n , King of Dublin until 980 1 and formerly King of York , making her a member of the Norse Irish U mair dynasty and the first Queen of Ireland of ultimately foreign or non Celtic lineage known to be historical. One of her brothers was the celebrated king of Dublin Sigtrygg Silkbeard Sitric Silkbeard , while a sister Gytha was wife to Olaf Tryggvason , King of Norway. M el Sechnaill s earlier wife, and quite possibly M el Muire s own mother, being first married to Amla b Cuar n, was the thrice married Gormflaith ingen Murchada , who became married to Brian B ruma circa 999, but it is unknown when M el Muire replaced her. Since Brian was not recognized High King until 1002, it is then possible M el Muire was already queen when he deposed M el Sechnaill, becoming queen again when Brian died in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, succeeding her possible mother Gormflaith twice. In the interval she would have been styled both Kingdom of Mide Queen of Mide and Hill of Tara Queen of Tara . Cerball mac Muirec in died 909 was Kings of Leinster king of Leinster . He was the son of Muirec n mac Diarmata and a member of the U F el in, the descendants of F el n mac Murchado died 738 , of one of three sept s of the U D nlainge of modern County Kildare in Ireland . Cerball succeeded his distant cousin Muiredach mac Brain of the U D nchada sept as king of Leinster on Muiredach s death in 885. Unlike Muiredach, who was lay abbot of Kildare as well as king, Cerball appears to have been king only as one Lergus son of Cruinn n, bishop of Kildare , was killed in the battle of the Pilgrim , fought by Flann Sinna , the High King of Ireland , against the Vikings of Dublin in 888. That same year, the neighbouring king of Osraige Cerball mac D nlainge , who had repeatedly attacked Leinster over the previous decades in an attempt to make it subject to him, died. The Annals of Ulster contain relatively few reports of Cerball s reign. In 902 they state that he, together with M el Finnia mac Flannacain of Kings of Brega Brega lead an expedition to Dublin which drove the foreigners , the Vikings and Norse Gaels , from Ireland. He fought alongside Flann whose daughter Gormflaith ingen Flann Sinna he married , against the men of Munster at the battle of Belach Mugna Ballymoon near Castledermot where Cormac mac Cuilenn in , King of Munster and Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly Bishop of Cashel , was killed. No footnotes date February 2011 A flaith Irish language Irish or flath Modern Scottish Gaelic Scottish , plural flatha , was an hereditary prince , or even princess , in the Gaels Gaelic world, with the plural often referring to the social class. The term could refer to any member in general of a powerful family enjoying a high degree of sovereignty , and so is also sometimes translated as lord or Aristocracy class aristocrat in the general sense, or can refer to sovereignty itself. Thus it did not usually refer to a specific office such as R king which any given flaith might or might not hold, allowing for the term to eventually develop the slightly alternative meaning of any hereditary high aristocrat who was understood to be subordinate to the king. In this later sense a flaith was similar to a magnate or Grandee . The later development in meaning, innocent in itself, unfortunately allowed the term flaith to become confused with chief as that term is commonly understood in English, when in fact a Gaelic chief was very often technically a r king of any one of three or more grades and holding a White Wand . A flaith might not hold a White Wand he might simply be a brother, nephew or some relation of the king. The flaith might be the head of a junior sept of the royal kindred or a member of another great family which was somehow in the king s service. It became an element in personal and eventually family names, an example being the royal family of O Flaherty or Ua Flaithbertaig Descendants of the Bright Prince . It could be combined with r to form the personal name Flaithr Princely King or Kingly Prince , an example being Flaithr mac Domnaill , King of Connacht . A Banfhlaith lit. Lady Prince was a princess more specifically described.
