He ascended to the throne with the help of Kublai Khan . During his reign, Goryeo became a dependency of the Mongol founded Yuan Dynasty in China . He was also the last Goryeo ruler to use the title temple name before restoration of the title in the Joseon Dynasty period, as the Goryeo rulers henceforth used the title, chung loyalty , following the demands of Kublai Khan . In 1269, the military leader Im Yon engineered a coup d etat to remove Wonjong. Kublai Khan dispatched 3,000 troops to oust the forces of the rebel. Wonjong visited the imperial court in 1271 after his re accession. Wonjong was the eldest son of the previous king, Gojong of Goryeo Gojong . He was the son of Wonjong of Goryeo Wonjong , his predecessor on the throne. Chungnyeol was the first Goryeo ruler to be remembered by the title wang , meaning king . Previous rulers had received temple name s with the suffix jo or jong , meaning revered ancestor and a title typically reserved for emperors. After Goryeo became a dependency of Yuan Dynasty , Yuan emperor Kublai Khan perceived this practice as lowering his own power and ordered that the Goryeo rulers could not receive such names henceforth. King Chungnyeol, as Crown Prince Sim, proposed to marry a daughter of Kublai Khan . Kublai Khan agreed and for more than 80 years, Goryeo kings married members of Mongol royalty. Heirs to the throne were given Mongol names and were sent to Khanbaliq Dadu where they were raised until they reached adulthood. He was deposed by Yi Seonggye , who then established the Joseon Dynasty . Gongyang was a seventh generation descendant of Sinjong of Goryeo , and the son of Wang Gyun. He married the daughter of Prince Changseong , Sunbi of the Roh clan. In 1389, Yi Seonggye s supporters forced Chang of Goryeo King Chang from the throne and enthroned Gongyang in his stead. This faction went on to oversee the events of Gongyang s brief reign, including the assassinations of Gongyang s predecessors, ex U of Goryeo King U and Chang of Goryeo ex King Chang . After the murder of Jeong Mong ju , the last major supporter of the Goryeo kings, Gongyang was deposed and the Goryeo dynasty came to an end. He was at first exiled to Wonju , then went to Samcheok where he died. Goryeo monarchs In 1314 King Chungseon of Goryeo Chungseon passed the throne to his son Chungsuk. In 1321 Chungsuk fathered his son Chunghye of Goryeo Chunghye . This prompted the previous crown prince of Goryeo, ljeit of Goryeo ljeit , to establish an alliance with Emperor Sidibala , and King Chungsuk was thus interned in 1321. However, Sidibala was assassinated in 1323 and ljeit s plan was aborted. King Chungsuk, who was allowed to return to Goryeo in 1325, passed the throne to King Chunghye in 1330 but was reinstated after two years because King Chunghye was deposed by Yuan. King Chungsuk died in 1339. He was remembered in the Goryeosa for his licentious lifestyle, particularly his habit of Kidnapping abducting , raping, and killing women. Chunghye was the son of Chungsuk of Goryeo King Chungsuk and Queen Myeongdeok , a Hong Korean name Hong . He is sometimes known by his Mongolian name, which is rendered in hanja as Botapsilli . Chunghye travelled to Yuan Dynasty China in 1328. In 1330, then king Chungsuk of Goryeo Chungsuk petitioned to abdicate the throne, and the emperor sent Chunghye back to Goryeo to assume the throne. But in the following year, Chungsuk returned to the throne and Chunghye returned to China. In 1339, Chungsuk died. One faction supported the noble Wang Go s claim to the throne , but their attempted coup failed and Chunghye s reign was restored. Seongjong set out to reform the Goryeo state and establish it as a centralised monarchy on a firmly Confucian foundation. In 983, he established the system of twelve mok , the administrative divisions which prevailed for most of the rest of the Goryeo period. He also sent learned men to each of the mok to oversee local education. This was intended particularly as a way to integrate the country aristocracy into the new bureaucratic system. He was the eldest son of Yejong of Goryeo king Yejong and Empress Sundeok. For much of his reign, the government was dominated by Yi Ja gyeom , the father of his queens, and by other members of the Gyeongwon Lee Korean name Yi clan. After Injong attempted to reclaim power, Yi launched a coup d tat in 1126, sacking much of the palace. With the aid of provincial leaders, Injong regained power in 1127. In 1135, Injong faced another rebellion, led by the Korean Buddhism Buddhist monk Myo Cheong . In 1145, Injong ordered the compilation of the Samguk Sagi , a chronicle of events in the Three Kingdoms of Korea Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla periods. Injong was succeeded by Uijong of Goryeo . He was the eldest son of Myeongjong of Goryeo King Myeongjong . His mother was Queen Gwangjeong, a Kim, and his wife was Queen Wondeok, a Yu and the daughter of Sin An hu . Gangjong was confirmed as heir in 1173. In 1197, he and his father were driven to Ganghwado by the military leader Choe Chung heon . In 1210 Gangjong returned to the capital, and he was given a royal title by Huijong of Goryeo Huijong in the following year. After Choe drove Huijong from power that year, Gangjong was placed on the throne. Gangjong s tomb is located outside the old Goryeo capital, in modern day Hy nhwa ri, Kaepung gun , Hwanghaenam do , North Korea . He was a grandson of Taejo of Goryeo Emperor Taejo . He was appointed by the military leader Gang Jo , whom the previous Emperor Mokjong of Goryeo Mokjong had called upon to destroy a plot by Kim Chi yang . In 1010, The Khitan attacked again during an internal Goryeo power struggle. Hyeonjong was forced to flee the capital temporarily, Hyeonjong directed the court to move far south to the port city of Naju . But Goryeo repulsed the khitan attack. Finally, Khitan forces withdrew. In 1019, when Goryeo continued to refuse to submit or return the northern territories, the Khitan attacked once more. Goryeo generals, including Gang Gam chan , were able to inflict heavy losses on the Khitan army in the Battle of Kwiju . The Khitan withdrew without achieving their demands. The Khitan never again invaded Goryeo. Both the Liao Dynasty and Goryeo enjoyed a time of peace, and their cultures were at their height. Meantime, Hyeonjong ordered the compilation of the Tripitaka, which was 6,000 volumes. It is the act of carving the woodblocks that was considered to be a way of bringing about a change in fortune by invoking the Buddha s help. He honored his advisors with many ceremonies but hated the warriors, often forcing them to participate in martial arts competitions for the entertainment of himself and the civil officials, as well as assigning them petty portions during land distributions. He also was often drunk, further angering the warriors. Finally, in the autumn of 1170, after constant discriminations, the rage of the military officials burst. Three warriors Jeong Jung bu , Yi Ui bang , Yi Go and others, started a military revolt, murdering the civil officials, deposing Emperor Uijong, and appointing a new Emperor in his place. During Chungjeong s brief reign, the politics of the court were controlled by powerful relatives of the royal family, including his mother s relative Yun Si u and the retainer Bae Jeon . In addition, the country endured heavy Wokou raids beginning in 1349. Chungjeong s uncle Wang Gi secured imperial favor and married a Yuan daughter, Princess Noguk . Shortly thereafter Chungjeong was deposed, and Wang Gi ascended the throne as Gongmin of Goryeo King Gongmin . Reign Mokjong is known for his reform of the Jeonsigwa land allotment system , and for a plot by his mother, Queen Honae and Kim Chi yang to overthrow him. In the course of the turbulent events surrounding the plot, Mokjong was dethroned by general Gang Jo and sent into exile in Chungju . However, he was slain before he arrived there.
