The service was launched in 2004 after a 575,500 transport grant from the Welsh Assembly Government . Swansea Council used this grant to buy a fleet of six buses four larger ones for the main routes and two small ones for the peninsula s tricky narrow lanes. Two east west trunk routes and a linking north south shuttle serve almost every village in the Gower, a prime tourist area west of Swansea. In June 2010, Swansea Council announced withdrawal of bus subsidies to save 200,000 and the Gower Explorer will run on a commercial basis from July 19th 2010. Evening services will be severely curtailed and Sunday service on the northern trunk route will be withdrawn. Relatively cut off from the Welsh hinterland, but with coastal links across south Wales and the West Country, the region developed a distinct English dialect which endured to within living memory. Not quite a language Peninsular Gower was geographically insulated from mainland modern language influences until well into the twentieth century. A number of words and proninciations were recorded during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as distinct usages in Gower many of which might once have been widespread but which had fallen out of use in the developing standard English . The song takes its tune and structure from the Irish traditional music Irish traditional song Here s A Health , in the same vein as The Liberty Song . Lyrics The majority of versions of the song begin with the same two stanzas, although pronouns i.e., you, we, your, our, etc vary. Following the second verse and chorus, the number of stanzas and their order vary from version to version. The primary difference between the lyrics that appear here is that one version is a dialogue between the wassailers and the master and mistress they are appealing to for hospitality. The other version is sung from the wassailers perspective alone.
