  1. Graphical user interface elements

Graphical user interface s, also known as GUIs, offer a consistent visual language to represent information stored in computers. This makes it easier for people with little computer skills to work with and use computer software. This article explains the most common elements of visual language interfaces found in the WIMP computing WIMP window, icon, menu, pointing device paradigm. These elements are usually embodied in an interface using a widget toolkit . Structural elements User interfaces use visual conventions to represent the generic information shown. Some conventions are used to build the structure of the static elements on which the user can interact, and define the appearance of the interface. Window Main Window computing A window is an area on the screen that displays information, with its contents being displayed independently from the rest of the screen. An example of a window is what appears on the screen when the My Documents Icon computing icon is clicked in the Microsoft Windows Windows Operating System . It is easy for a user to manipulate a window it can be shown and hidden by clicking on an icon or Application software application , and it can be moved to any area by dragging it that is, by clicking in a certain area of the window  usually the title bar along the tops  and keeping the pointing device s button pressed, then moving the pointing device . PMICOS 5th Annual Conference, Chicago, IL. ref It was created as an alternative to the Critical path method Critical Path Method CPM and was designed as a graphical tool to encourage an engaging, planning centric experience for project stakeholders. ref name Mubarak Technique To create a GPM schedule, users draw and place objects such as Activity project management activities , Milestone project management milestones , and benchmarks on a time scaled canvas. Objects are linked together to establish logical, precedence relationships. These relationships are governed by the Logic Diagramming Method LDM , a blend of the Arrow Diagramming Method Arrow Diagramming Method ADM and the Precedence Diagram Method Precedence Diagramming Method PDM . In total, LDM permits 12 relationship types to account for all possible Dependency project management dependencies between objects. 1. Graphical user interface testing

In software engineering , graphical user interface testing is the process of testing a product s graphical user interface to ensure it meets its written specifications. This is normally done through the use of a variety of test case s. Test Case Generation To generate a good set of test case s, the test design ers must be certain that their suite covers all the functionality of the system and also has to be sure that the suite fully exercises the GUI itself. The difficulty in accomplishing this task is twofold one has to deal with domain size and then one has to deal with sequences. In addition, the tester faces more difficulty when they have to do regression testing . The size problem can be easily illustrated. Unlike a command line interface CLI command line interface system, a GUI has many operations that need to be tested. A relatively small program such as Microsoft WordPad has 325 possible GUI operations. ref name one Atif M. Memon, M.E. Pollack and M.L. Soffa. Using a Goal driven Approach to Generate Test Cases for GUIs. ICSE 99 Proceedings of the 21st international conference on Software engineering. ref In a large program, the number of operations can easily be an order of magnitude larger. The second problem is the sequencing problem. Some functionality of the system may only be accomplished by following some complex sequence of GUI events. For example, to open a file a user may have to click on the File Menu and then select the Open operation, and then use a dialog box to specify the file name, and then focus the application on the newly opened window. Obviously, increasing the number of possible operations increases the sequencing problem exponentially. This can ... validation extremely difficult. 1. Penrose graphical notation

In mathematics and physics , Penrose graphical notation or tensor diagram notation is a usually handwritten visual depiction of multilinear function s or tensor s proposed by Roger Penrose ref see e.g. Quantum invariants of knots and 3 manifolds by V. G. Turaev 1994 , page 71 ref . A diagram in the notation consists of several shapes linked together by lines, much like tinker toys . The notation has been studied extensively by Predrag Cvitanovi , who used it to classify the classical Lie groups ref cite book author Predrag Cvitanovi year 2008 title Group Theory Birdtracks, Lie s, and Exceptional Groups publisher Princeton University Press url http birdtracks.eu ref . It has also been generalized using representation theory to spin networks in physics, and with the presence of matrix group s to trace diagram s in linear algebra. Interpretations Multilinear algebra In the language of multilinear algebra , each shape represents a multilinear function . The lines attached to shapes represent the inputs or outputs of a function, and attaching shapes together in some way is essentially the composition of functions . Tensors In the language of tensor tensor algebra , a particular tensor is associated with a particular shape with many lines projecting upwards and downwards, corresponding to abstract index notation abstract Covariance and contravariance of vectors upper and lower indices of tensors respectively. Connecting lines between two shapes corresponds to tensor contraction contraction of indices . One advantage of this Mathematical notation notation is that one does not have to invent new letters for new indices. This notation is also explicitly basis linear algebra basis independent ref Roger Penrose , The Road to Reality A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe , 2005, ISBN 0 099 44068 7, Chapter Manifolds of n dimensions . ref Matrices Each shape represents a matrix ... identity math nabla a R bc d e 0 math See also Commons category Penrose graphical notation Abstract ...   more details

  1. Vector-based graphical user interface

A Vector Graphics vector based graphical user interface is a mostly conceptual type of graphical user interface where elements are drawn using vector, rather than Raster Graphics raster information. Image 3D GUI.png thumb 200px An example of a vector based window, found in a privately funded vector based graphical user interface research project. Pros and Cons The benefits of a completely vector based graphical user interface would include more efficient, independent scalability The resolution measured in dots per inch or DPI could be set higher or lower than 1px 1px without causing pixelation , enabling better use of high resolution monitors. Cons might include Difficulty integrating raster based applications. With some effort, this could be accomplished by texturing the entire raster based application to a vector based plane though the disadvantages of raster based graphics would still stand . Slower rendering, greater system requirements. Because today s monitors display only raster based information, the vector information would have to be rasterized and optionally Anti aliasing anti aliased before appearing. 1. IBM Graphical Data Display Manager (GDDM)

GDDM Graphical Data Display Manager is a computer graphics system for the IBM System 370 which was developed in IBM s Hursley lab, and first released in 1979. GDDM was originally designed to provide programming support for the IBM 3279 colour display terminal and the associated 3287 colour printer. The 3279 was the first colour graphics terminal that could be used in a general business environment. GDDM was extended in the early 1980s to provide graphics support for all of IBM s display terminals and printers, and ran on all of IBM s mainframe operating systems. GDDM also provided support for the then current international standards for interactive computer graphics GKS and PHIGS . Both GKS and PHIGS were designed around the requirements of CAD systems. GDDM comprises a number of components Graphics primitives lines, circles, boxes etc. Graphing through the Presentation Graphics Feature PGF Language support PL I, REXX, COBOL etc. Conversion capabilities for example to GIF format. Interactive Chart Utility ICU . GDDM remains in widespread use today, embedded in many z OS applications, as well as in System programs. GDDM and OS 2 Presentation Manager When IBM and Microsoft began collaborating on the design of OS 2 in 1986 the Graphics Presentation Interface GPI which was the graphics API in Presentation Manager was based on IBM s GDDM and the Graphics Control Program GCP . GCP was originally developed in Hursley for the 3270 PC G and 3270 PC GX terminals. The GPI was used as the primary graphics API for the OS 2 operating system. At the time 1980s , the graphical user interface GUI was still in its early stages of popularity, but already it was clear that the foundation of a good GUI was a graphics API with strong real time interactive capabilities. Unfortunately, the design of GDDM was closer to at the time traditional graphics APIs like GKS , which made it unsuited for more ... 1 55615 170 5.
