It is generally installed in the thalweg , the deepest continuous line along a valley or watercourse , of a cultivated dry valley in order to control erosion . Concept and effects of a multi purpose grassed waterway. Soil Use and Management 19, 65 72. ref Distinctions Confusion between grassed waterways and vegetative filter strips should be avoided. The latter are generally narrower only a few meters wide and rather installed along rivers as well as along or within cultivated fields. However buffer strip can be a synonym , with shrubs and trees added to the plant component, as does a Riparian zone . Runoff erosion mitigation Image Chenal mauvaistemps.jpg right thumb Grassed waterway in Velm, Belgium, after a thunderstorm Surface runoff Runoff generated on cropland during storms or long winter rains concentrates in the thalweg where it can lead to rill or gully erosion. Rills and gullies further concentrate runoff and speed up its transfer, which can worsen damage occurring downstream. This can result in a muddy flood . In this context, a grassed waterway allows increasing soil cohesion and roughness. It also prevents the formation of rills and gullies. Furthermore, it can slow down runoff and allow its re infiltration during long winter rains. In contrast, its infiltration ... dams across the grassed waterway, in order to buffer runoff temporarily. ref Evrard, O., Vandaele, K., van Wesemael, B., Bielders, C.L, 2008. Holden Park also known locally as Oakworth Park is the only park in the village of Oakworth , West Yorkshire , England . It was given to the people of Oakworth by the family of Sir Sir Isaac Holden, 1st Baronet Isaac Holden in 1927. The park was formerly the grounds of Holden s house Oakworth House and garden. The house was partially destroyed in a fire in 1907, ten years after Sir Isaac s death in 1897. On the site of the house there is now a bowls or bowling green. The huge glasshouses are gone, and all that is left of the winter gardens are the caves and grottoes created by Holden. The park contains the local war memorial a stone portico entrance, which is the only surviving remnant of Oakworth House and Holden s summer house, made from a steel framework and hypertufa shaped to look like wooden branches. Past the grottoes and caves there is a large grassed area which used to be the vegetable garden for the house and was later a putting green, and above this are the woods, which contain many paths originally laid out by Holden. There is an active Friends of Holden Park group, started in April 2004 and mostly consisting of local people, which seeks to preserve and protect the remaining features with support from the local community. The Broad Town White Horse is a hill figure of a horse located in the village of Broad Town , Wiltshire , England . It is believed to of been cut in 1864 and is one in eight hill figures in Wiltshire of a white horse. The horse faces west on a long grassed covered steep slope 450 above sea level above Littletown nursey farmhouse just outside Broad Town. The horse is 80 by 60 feet in size composed of fine compacted chalk, with well defined edges. The horse can be seen well from the B4041 and from the centre of Broad Town itself. One approchable view is from the farm track which leads from Chapel Lane to Littletown farmhouse. The footpath leading from this track allows the horse to be approached, the steps up to the horse are somewhat dangerous and it is advised that they are not used. The Restoration Society asks Would visitors not climb the steps below the Horse as they are dangerous and are only to be used when the Horse is being maintained. The land is private and no responsibility for any accident can be accepted. ref Broad Town White Horse Restoration Society site ref . According to Rev. Plenderleath, writing in 1885, it was cut in 1864 by a William Simmonds, who held the farm then.
