GreatBasin rattlesnake may refer to Crotalus oreganus in general , a.k.a. the western rattlesnake, a venomous pit viper species found in North America in the western United States, parts of British Columbia and northwestern Mexico. Crotalus oreganus lutosus in particular , a.k.a. the GreatBasin rattlesnake, a venomous pit viper subspecies found in the GreatBasin region of the United States. This area stretches from parts of eastern California east into Western Colorado, from south Nevada north into southeastern Oregon. The GreatBasin rattlesnake is not a large snake, adults range in size from 15 to 36 with the rare individual a few inches larger than three feet. The GreatBasin rattlesnake displays many different color variations throughout its range. It is commonly found in rocky sagebrush desert and rangeland areas. The species often hibernates in south facing rocky den sites, where large numbers often congregate in the deep crevices of these rocky slopes. The GreatBasin rattlesnake feeds mainly on small rodents and will also eat lizards and the occasional bird. The young are born live in the late summer months. During the heat of the summer these reptiles are most active at night.
