File OldMenInLove.jpg thumb right 1st edition OldMen In Love is a novel by Alasdair Gray , published by Bloomsbury in 2007. Adapting its central conceit that it represents a found manuscript by one John Tunnock, which Gray merely edits from the author s earlier Poor Things , the writing presented as Tunnock s likewise recycles earlier material by Gray. Tunnock s unfinished trilogy of novels, based on the lives of Socrates , Fra Lippo Lippi and Henry James Prince , are thus re workings of earlier stage and television drama by Gray. Such unoriginality is pointed out in the afterword to the novel a trick Gray employs earlier in Something Leather by the literary critic Sidney Workman a fictitious alter ego used in his debut novel, Lanark . OldMen In Love was met with an ambiguous critical reception, praised for its striking design and diverting contents, criticised for its lack of substance and cynical derivation from earlier material. Writing in the Observer, James Purdon commented that In form as well as subject matter, this is probably the most twitchily onanistic fiction since Portnoy s Complaint . ref http observer.guardian.co.uk print 0,,331227035 102280,00.html Purdon, James. The Parable of the OldMen and the Young is a poem by Wilfred Owen which compares the ascent of Abraham to Mount Moriah and his Binding of Isaac near sacrifice of Isaac there with the start of World War I . It had first been published by Siegfried Sassoon in 1920 with the title The Parable of the Old Man and the Young , without the last line And half the seed of Europe, one by one . ref http modernism.research.yale.edu wiki index.php Poems 28Wilfred Owen 29 Yale University, The Modernism Lab ref The poem is an allusion to a story in the Bible , Book of Genesis Genesis 22 1 18. In the poem, the biblical patriarch Abraham significantly called by his former name, Abram, in the poem takes Isaac his only begotten son by his wife Sarah with him to make a sacrificial offering to God. The offering, though Isaac does not know this, is to be Isaac himself. Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps , which suggests imagery relating to a young soldier being sent, possibly against his will, in a uniform to fight. When he makes to sacrifice his son, an angel calls from heaven, and tells Abram not to harm Isaac. Instead, he must offer the Ram of Pride . Then follow the last two lines of the poem diverges from the Biblical account, set apart for greater effect But the old man would not so, but slew his son, and half the seed of Europe, one by one. The Parable of the OldMen and the Young is written loosely in iambic pentameter . It does not use traditional rhyme instead, the lines are bound together by assonance , consonance , and alliteration . As the title mentions, the poem is a parable . This figure seems to be shouting into the ear of his companion, which might be an allusion to Goya s deafness. There is a noticeable difference between the treatment of the two figures. Calmly resting on his walking stick with a sad but serene expression, the bearded man recalls the philosophers depicted by Diego Vel zquez Vel zquez , which had been copied by Goya. Only OldMen Are Going to Battle lang ru , lang uk is a 1973 Soviet film about World War II fighter pilot s, written and directed by Leonid Bykov , who also played the lead role as the squadron commander. The story is based on the memoirs of Russian fighter ace Vitaly Popkov . The title comes from two scenes in the film, where the squadron is facing very hard dogfight s with German fighter planes, so only oldmen i.e. veterans are sent up, while those fresh from flying school have to wait on the ground together with the mechanics. Soon, of course, the newcomers have replaced most of those veterans and have become oldmen themselves, taking to the skies while a new group of newcomers wait on the ground with the mechanics... The film won the first prize in the 7th All Union Film Festival in Baku in 1974. Screenplay by Leonid Bykov , Yevgeni Onopriyenko writer Yevgeni Onopriyenko and Aleksandr Satsky . Original music by Viktor Shevchenko , cinematography by Vladimir Vojtenko. Runtime 92 min. Production by Dovzhenko Film Studios . In 2009 a Film colorization colorized version was released for TV and DVD, which resulted in a legal battle in Ukrainian courts between the copyright owners, Leonid Bykov s daughter and Ukrainian Dovzhenko Film Studios , and the company behind the colorization, as the copyright owners claim that the colorization has been done against the wishes of Bykov, who intentionally chose to do the film in black and white, in order to match newly shot scenes with the newsreel material in the film.
