for the Archbishop of Toledo Gunderic archbishop Unreferenced date February 2007 Gunderic 379 428 , King of the Vandals and Alans 407 428 , led the Vandals , a Germanic tribes Germanic tribe originally residing near the Oder River, to take part in the barbarian invasions of the western Roman Empire in the fifth century. History He was a son of King Godigisel , the Vandal king when his people breached the Rhine River frontier of the Empire on the last day of 406. During that year, the Vandals had become heavily involved in a war with the Franks , who were already settled in Gaul as allies of the Romans, and who attempted to keep the Vandals out. Godigisel was killed in the fighting and Gunderic succeeded him. Gunderic and his people ultimately crossed the Pyrenees into the Iberian Peninsula . With the Hasdingi portion of the Vandals he established the Kingdom in the Roman province of Gallaecia north western Iberia . Conflicts with the Suebi drove him into Baetica in the south of Hispania , where he joined the Silingi portion of the Vandals. Some scholars believe that the modern name of the region, Andalusia , is derived from the Vandals, because they invaded North Africa from the Iberian Peninsula. They were later driven out by the Visigoths, along with the Alans and were forced to leave Hispania. Around 426, Attaces , the king of the Alans , fell in battle against the Visigoths in Hispania, and most of the surviving Alans appealed to Gunderic. Gunderic accepted their request and thus became King of the Vandals and Alans. Late in his reign, the Vandals themselves began to clash more and more with the Visigoth s, often getting the worse of these battles because the Visigoths were so much more numerous. After Gunderic died early in 428, the Vandals elected his half brother ... 407&ndash 428 s aft after Genseric end Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata . Gunderic died before 711 was the Archbishop of Toledo briefly between Felix, Archbishop of Toledo Felix and Sindered of Toledo Sindered from about 701. He was a Visigoth and is highly praised in the Chronicle of 754 , according to which he was a holy man who performed many miracles. The Eighteenth Council of Toledo was the last of the councils of Toledo held in Visigoths Visigothic Spain before the Moorish conquest and perhaps the last of the Siglo de Concilios , that is, the seventh century. It was held after the Seventeenth Council of Toledo Seventeenth Council in 694 and before the coming of the Moors in 711, probably in 703 during the reign of King Wittiza Witiza 701&ndash 710 or his co reign with his father, Ergica , from 693. It was presided over by Gunderic, Archbishop of Toledo . An account of the acts of the council was preserved through the Middle Ages , but was lost and is no longer extant. The issues dealt with are likewise lost, but it is presumed that the problems Witiza experienced with the church stem from this council. It is just possible that its acta were suppressed because of their tendentious nature. Later sources accuse Witiza of trying to force priests to marry. Sources Collins, Roger. Italic title The Days of His Grace lang sv Hans n des tid is a 1960 novel by Swedish writer Eyvind Johnson . Set mostly in northern Italy, close to Aquileia , it tells the story of the fate of a Langobard family as their homeland falls under the domination of Charlemagne . The major theme running through the book is the way the actions of the various characters are influenced by love, but also the difficulty of adapting to the arbitrary and overbearing power of absolute monarchy. The novel, translated into English by Elspeth Harley Schubert and published in 1968, is based somewhat on Charlemagne conquering northern Italy in 775. In its introductory remarks, Johnson acknowledges the historical plot, and his altering some dates. The central story follows the Lupigis family and the difficult fates they suffer following a rebellion against Emperor Charlemagne. He was elected to the throne after Athaulf and then Sigeric were assassinated in 415. Early on, Wallia made peace with Emperor Flavius Augustus Honorius Honorius and accepted a treaty with the Roman Empire . He also returned Honorius sister Galla Placidia to him. As gains from these arrangements, Wallia was granted Aquitaine in 417 as a region where the Visigoths would be based as official allies or foederati . He established his court in Toulouse , which became the Visigothic capital for the rest of the fifth century. In 418 he honored the alliance by invading Hispania , where his army destroyed the Siling Vandals and so reduced the numbers of Alans living there that the survivors placed themselves under the rule of Gunderic , king of the Asding Vandals.
