He was a brother of the Prince Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe Schillingsf rst Chancellor . He took Catholic holy orders in 1849 and became in 1857 Bishop of Edessa in partibus and almoner to Pope Pius IX . He was made Cardinal Catholicism Cardinal in 1866, and endeavored to prevent the Kulturkampf . He was sent to Rome in 1872 as Ambassador to the Holy See , but his appointment was rejected by Pius IX. He returned to Rome in 1876 and subsequently gained the favor of Pope Leo XIII . From 1879 to 1884 he was Bishop of Albano and became subsequently archpriest of Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. He died in Rome, October 30, 1896. His portrait was apparently painted by the Swiss born American artist Adolfo M ller Ury 1862 1947 during the two years he spent studying in Italy 1882 1884, and was probably signed Ad. Muller. He studied medicine in G ttingen under surgeon Konrad Johann Martin Langenbeck 1776 1851 and obstetrician Friedrich Benjamin Osiander 1759 1822 , and later was director of the Obstetric Hospital and the School of Midwifery at Kiel. He was the father of archaeologist Adolf Michaelis 1835 1910 . Michaelis was a pioneer of scientific obstetrics who is remembered for his work in pelvimetry . He performed extensive research involving difficulties associated with a narrow human pelvis pelvis and its relationship to childbirth , which he documented in a treatise called Das Enge Becken Nach eigenen Beobachtungen und Untersuchungen . After being informed of Ignaz Semmelweis theory of prophylaxis for prevention of puerperal fever , Michaelis was one of the first obstetricians to adopt the practice of compulsory chlorine handwashing. Afterwards, he became severely depressed over the number of women including a beloved cousin who had died from puerperal fever due to unsanitary obstetrical practices, and on August 8, 1848, Michaelis committed suicide in Lehrte , Germany. After his death, his position at Kiel was replaced by Carl Conrad Theodor Litzmann 1815 1890 . Today, the Michaelis Midwifery School at the University of Kiel is named in his honor.
