Biography He was educated at the classical school in J nk pings, where his father, a judge of the aulic court for the south of Sweden, resided, and in 1810 he entered the Swedish military navy. In 1815 he settled on the eastern shore of Maryland, where he was engaged as a private tutor. Five years later he went to Richmond, Virginia , studied law, and after being admitted to the bar practised that profession for a number of years. Among the important cases with which he was connected was that of three Spaniards charged with piracy and murder on board the brig Crawford. He was assigned as counsel for them by Chief Justice John Marshall , to whom he had been introduced by his elder brother, Christian. The case created an unusual sensation, owing to the horrible nature of the crime. Subsequently Schmidt published A Brief Sketch of the Occurrences on board the Brig Crawford Richmond, 1827 . In 1829, Schmidt moved to New Orleans, Louisiana , where he met and married Melanie Seghers, daughter of a prominent attorney, and established himself in New Orleans society and the legal profession there. Gustavus John Esselen 1888 1952 was an American chemist born in Roxbury, Boston , Massachusetts. He studied at Harvard University where he was awarded the A.B. United States A.B. magna cum laude in chemistry in 1909 and a doctorate in 1912. Until 1921 he was a member of the research staff of General Electric and then of Arthur D. Little . Gustavus Brander 1720 1787 , England English naturalist, who came of a Sweden Swedish family, was born in London in 1720, and was brought up as a merchant, in which capacity he achieved success and became a director of the Bank of England . His leisure time was occupied in scientific pursuits, and at his country residence at Christchurch, Dorset Christchurch in Hampshire he became interested in the fossil s so abundant in the clay s of Hordwell and Barton . A set of these was presented by him to the British Museum , and they were described by Daniel Solander in the beautifully illustrated work entitled Fossilia Hantoniensia collecta, et in Musaeo Britannico deposita a Gustavo Brander London, 1766 . Brander was elected Fellow of the Royal Society F.R.S. in 1754, and he was also a trustee of the British Museum. He died on 21 January 1787. Gustavus Green 11 March 1865 29 December 1964 was a United Kingdom British engineer who made significant contributions to the design of early aircraft engine s. Born in Hounslow on 11 March 1865 ref name obit Green opened a bicycle factory in Bexhill on Sea , and in 1905 built his first lightweight, Water cooling water cooled aircraft engine and soon established the Green Engine Co to produce them. Green engines were much used by the pioneers of British aviation, for example Alliott Verdon Roe and Samuel Cody . His later engines were too heavy for the aircraft of the time, but were used to power Coastal Motor Boat torpedo boats during World War I . In 1909, Green was awarded a 1,000 prize by the British government for his work on aero engines, and another 5,000 in 1914. After World War II, Green became involved in the development of the flexible deck concept for aircraft carriers , his ideas for such a deck culminating in the successful landing of a de Havilland Vampire de Havilland Sea Vampire flown by Eric Brown pilot Eric Winkle Brown on an experimental rubber deck installed on HMS Warrior R31 HMS Warrior .
