GuyI died 860 was the Duke of Spoleto from 842. He was the son of Lambert I of Nantes and Adelaide of Lombardy, the eldest daughter of Pepin of Italy . In 843, he interfered in the Beneventan civil war on the side of his brother in law Siconulf of Salerno Siconulf . He acted as arbiter several times for high fees, but only Lothair s successor, the Emperor Louis II of Italy Louis II , could end the strife. In 846, he alone succeeded in driving the Saracens out of Latium after their Sack of Rome 846 sack of Saint Peter s Basilica in Rome . In 858, he supported Adhemar of Salerno against the pretensious Prince of Capua count of Capua , Lando I of Capua Lando I , and by his interevention secured the Liri Valley , with Sora, Italy Sora and Arpino taken from the count s brother Landenulf of Teano. He was the son of Boniface I of the Hucpoldings Boniface II , former duke, and member of the line of the Hucpoldings , a house of Frankish Ripuarian origin that built its fortunes in Italy since the 9th century. Theobald was an unscrupulous prince, even for his age, and his career is one of constantly changing alliances as the political winds of central and southern Italy changed direction. In 929, Theobald joined Landulf I of Benevento and Guaimar II of Salerno in a series of joint attacks against Byzantine Empire Byzantine Campania , Apulia , and Calabria . Theobald was detrimental to the others cooperation and all three were unsuccessful and Guaimar returned to his earlier Greek allegiance. Theobald also allied with Docibilis II of Gaeta against the Greeks. She married Berengar, Holy Roman Emperor Berengar c. 880, becoming Queen of Italy in 888. However, her husband lost his throne in the following year to Guy III of SpoletoGuy of Spoleto . Berengar began to reassert his power in 896, after the fall of the Spoleto family, and the withdrawal of Arnulf of Carinthia Emperor Arnulf from the peninsula however, a defeat by a Magyar army, and the decision by the Italian nobles to appoint Louis the Blind Louis of Provence as King of Italy, delayed the King and Queen s formal return to power until 905.
