Use dmy dates date August 2011 primary sources date March 2011 Curriculum for Excellence is the national curriculum for Scottish schools for learners from age 3 to 18. It was developed out of a 2002 consultation exercise the National Debate on Education undertaken by the Scottish Executive on the state of school education. In response to the National Debate, Ministers established a Curriculum Review Group in November 2003 to identify the purposes of education for the 3 to 18 age range and determine the key principles to be applied in redesigning the curriculum. Its work resulted in the publication in November 2004 of the document A Curriculum for Excellence . ref name currExcellence http www.scotland.gov.uk library5 education cerv 00.asp ref This document identifies four key purposes of education that enable young people to become, successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. The implementation of Curriculum for Excellence is being led by Learning and Teaching Scotland . Criticism Many within the Scottish teaching profession, including the teachers union Educational Institute of Scotland EIS and its members, ref http news.bbc.co.uk 1 hi scotland 8039474.stm ref believe that the Curriculum for Excellence is too vague, in particular with regards to its outcomes and experiences . There exists a fear that this vague factor will result in teachers not knowing what is expected of them in the classroom. These fears have led to one of the most educationally successful Scottish local authorities, East Renfrewshire, to delay its implementation of the senior phase of the new curriculum by one year. Some Scottish private schools, including the prestigious St Aloysius College in Glasgow, have chosen to do likewise. Emergent curriculum is a way of planning curriculum based on the student s interest and passions as well as the teacher s. To plan an emergent curriculum requires observation, documentation, creative brainstorming, flexibility and patience. Rather than starting with a lesson plan which requires a hook to get the children interested, emergent curriculum starts with the children s interests. This is not to say that the teacher has no input, in fact teachers may well have a general topic they think is important for children to study and they may purposely include certain materials or experiences related to it as jumping off points. Elizabeth Jones points out blockquote We are the stage directors curriculum is teacher s responsibility, not children s. People who hear the words emergent curriculum may wrongly assume that everything simply emerges from the children. The children s ideas are an important source of curriculum but only one of many possible sources that reflect the complex ecology of their lives. Cleanup date May 2009 Curriculum 2000 was a reform of the Advanced Level UK A Level age 16 18 examination in the United Kingdom . It was introduced in September 2000 with the first AS Level examinations held in Summer 2001 and A2 examinations the following year . An A Level now consists of four or six units studied over two years. Normally, two or three units are assessed at the end of the first year, and make up a stand alone Advanced Subsidiary AS Level qualification. Another two or three modules are assessed at the end of the second year, which make up the A2 Level. A2 units do not form a qualification in their own right the satisfactory completion of the AS and A2 units in the same subject is required to constitute a complete A Level. Due to the modular structure, units can be taken in January and June of the year. To begin with each unit could only be retaken once, but there is now no limit on the number of times a unit may be retaken although, in many schools, students must pay for any subsequent re sits themselves , and no restrictions on when this is done i.e. it is possible to take or retake AS units during the A2 year, and vice versa . Some schools choose to conduct all AS and A2 examinations at the end of the first or second years. In the former case, this means students complete the A level in one year, which is possible for more academically able students. In the latter case, students do not have the opportunity to resit any units and have a more stressful workload at the end of their second year, although by reducing the amount of time taken for exam leave and conducting ... for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment CCEA sets them in Northern Ireland.
