  1. High Performance Fortran

High Performance Fortran HPF is an extension of Fortran 90 with constructs that support parallel computing , published by the High Performance Fortran Forum HPFF . The HPFF was convened and chaired by Ken Kennedy computer scientist Ken Kennedy of Rice University . The first version of the HPF Report was published in 1993. Building on the array syntax introduced in Fortran 90, HPF uses a data parallelism data parallel model of computation to support spreading the work of a single Array data structure array computation over multiple processors. This allows efficient implementation on both SIMD and MIMD style architectures. HPF features included New Fortran statements, such as code FORALL code , and the ability to create pure function code PURE code side effect computer science side effect free procedures Compiler directives for recommended distributions of array data Extrinsic procedure interface for interfacing to non HPF parallel procedures such as those using message passing Additional library routines including environmental inquiry, parallel prefix suffix e.g., prefix sum scan , data scattering, and sorting operations Fortran 95 incorporated several HPF capabilities. 1. CAP-e

CAP e cell based antioxidant protection in erythrocytes , is a novel in vitro bioassay for antioxidant activity developed by Alexander Schauss, Gitte Jensen, and associates at the American Institute for Biosocial and Medical Research AIBMR , a private contract research organization CRO located in Puyallup, Washington , and Holger NIS, a private CRO located in Klamath Falls, Oregon . The CAP e assay is performed by first incubating red blood cells erythrocytes with a test sample at a range of concentrations. The cells are then combined with dichloro fluorescein diacetate DCFDA , which is oxidized in the presence of free radicals to form a green fluorescent byproduct DCF . In the next step of the assay, exogenous hydrogen peroxide is added at a concentration of 167 millimolar mM to artificially induce severe oxidative stress . The antioxidant activity of varying concentrations of the test compound is measured based on the degree of inhibition of DCF fluorescence, which is an indirect and nonspecific measure of reactive oxygen species production. ref name invitrogen cite web url http www.invitrogen.com site us en home References Molecular Probes The Handbook tables Fluorescence response of 3 p aminophenyl fluorescein APF 3 p hydroxyphenyl fluorescein HPF and dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate H2DCFDA to various reactive oxygen species ROS.html title Fluorescence response of 3 p aminophenyl fluorescein APF , 3 p hydroxyphenyl fluorescein HPF and dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate H sub 2 sub DCFDA to various reactive oxygen species ROS accessdate 2009 10 10 publisher Invitrogen.com ref To date, the assay has been used in 2 published studies, both conducted by AIBMR and Holger NIS. ref name honzel cite journal doi 10.1021 jf800401d author Honzel D, Carter SG, Redman KA, Schauss AG, Endres JR, Jensen GS year 2008 title Comparison of chemical and cell based antioxidant methods for evaluation of foods and natural products generating multifaceted data by parallel testing ...   more details

  1. Implicit parallelism

In computer science , implicit parallelism is a characteristic of a programming language that allows a compiler or interpreter to automatically exploit the parallel computing parallelism inherent to the computations expressed by some of the language s constructs. A pure implicitly parallel language does not need special directives, operators or functions to enable parallel execution. Programming languages with implicit parallelism include Axum programming language Axum , High Performance Fortran HPF , Id programming language Id , LabVIEW , MATLAB MATLAB M code , NESL , SAC programming language SaC , SISAL , ZPL programming language ZPL , and pH ref cite book last Nikhil first Rishiyur coauthors Arvind title Implicit Parallel Programming in pH isbn 1 5586 0644 0 ref . Example If a particular problem involves performing the same operation on a group of numbers such as taking the sine or logarithm of each in turn , a language that provides implicit parallelism might allow the programmer to write the instruction thus source lang matlab numbers 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 result sin numbers source The compiler or interpreter can calculate the sine of each element independently, spreading the effort across multiple processors if available. Advantages A programmer that writes implicitly parallel code does not need to worry about task division or process communication, focusing instead in the problem that his or her program is intended to solve. Implicit parallelism generally facilitates the design of parallel programs and therefore results in a substantial improvement of programmer productivity. Disadvantages Languages with implicit parallelism reduce the control that the programmer has over the parallel execution of the program, resulting sometimes in less than optimal parallel efficiency . The makers of the Oz programming language also note that their early experiments with implicit parallelism showed that implicit parallelism made debugging difficult and object models unnecessarily ...   more details

  1. Biquadratic field

In mathematics , a biquadratic field is a number field K of a particular kind, which is a Galois extension of the rational number field Q with Galois group the Klein four group . Such fields are all obtained by adjoining two square root s. Therefore in explicit terms we have K Q a , b for rational numbers a and b . There is no loss of generality in taking a and b to be non zero and square free integer s. According to Galois theory , there must be three quadratic field s contained in K , since the Galois group has three subgroup s of index 2. The third subfield, to add to the evident Q a and Q b , is Q ab . Biquadratic fields are the simplest examples of abelian extension s of Q that are not cyclic extension s. According to general theory the Dedekind zeta function of such a field is a product of the Riemann zeta function and three Dirichlet L function s. Those L functions are for the Dirichlet character s which are the Jacobi symbol s attached to the three quadratic fields. Therefore taking the product of the Dedekind zeta functions of the quadratic fields, multiplying them together, and dividing by the square of the Riemann zeta function, is a recipe for the Dedekind zeta function of the biquadratic field. This illustrates also some general principles on abelian extensions, such as the calculation of the conductor class field theory conductor of a field . Such L functions have applications in analytic theory Siegel zero es , and in some of Kronecker s work.
