  1. Legendary material in Christian hagiography

Refimprove date September 2010 Synthesis date September 2010 While from its early days Christian hagiography recognized some distinction between the mythical and the historical in the lives of saints and martyrs, the more precise conception of legendary material in hagiography belongs to the religious practice of the Middle Ages. Dubious date September 2010 From the early modern period standards of historiography began to be applied to the corpus of writings. It became apparent that Christian legends repeat the conceptions found in pre Christian religious tales. Terminology The legenda literally, that which is for reading included facts which were historically genuine, as well as narrative which Christians now class as unhistorical legend. The term is a creation of the Middle Ages, and has its source in the reading of the prayers used in religious services. Since the days of the martyrs, the Catholic Church recalled to mind her famous dead in the prayers of the Mass and in the Office, by commemorating the names noted in the martyrologies and making mention of incidents in their lives and martyrdom. When the lectio became a matter of precept, the reading matter in the office for the day became in a precise sense legenda that which must be read . After the 13th century, the word legenda was regarded as the equivalent of Hagiography vita Life and passio suffering , and, in the 15th century, the liber lectionarius is comprised under what is known as legend . Thus, historically considered, legend is the received story of the saints. 1. Embrico of Mainz

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Embrico of Mainz was a twelfth century scholar and the author of the Vita Mahumeti . Embrico wrote the Vita in verse, modelled on the verse hagiography of contemporaries such as Hildebert of Le Mans . Whereas earlier texts had portrayed Islam as Paganism pagan idolatry and Muhammad as a pagan deity , Embrico and subsequent 12th century scholars viewed Islam as a form of Christian heresy and Muhammad as a particularly vile heresiarch . Earlier studies of this change have explained it as a response to further exposure to Islam, though the resurgence of heresy within Christian Europe is of note. In each case, Islam is associated with forms of doctrinal corruption paganism for the early Middle Ages , heresy for the twelfth century.
