The very beginning of the book starts with Harry being told by a friend that his mentor Hugh Montague has either been assassinated or committed suicide on his boat. He then is told by his wife, Kittredge, that she has been unfaithful and is in love with another man. Emotionally worn, he goes to Russia. It is there that he rereads the dense manuscript of his life at the CIA, whose working title is The Game . At that point, the book really begins. The rest of the book follows his relationship with his father, his lover, Kittredge, and other people with whom he worked. The book ends in 1984 with the words To be continued. November 1777 was a well known physician doctor in eighteenth century London. Originally from Hamburg , he was depicted by William Hogarth in the fifth scene of his 1731 2 satirical and moralistic series, A Harlot s Progress , where he stands in dispute with notable French doctor John Misaubin beside the dying body of their patient, Moll Hackabout. The contrast between Rock German, short and fat and Misaubin French and gaunt is intentional. Misaubin is easily recognised by his notably tall and thin appearance, but the second doctor was harder to identify with certainty, so Hogarth added his name on a slip of paper on the stool to the lower right of the scene in later printings. Hogarth also included Rock in his 1738 engraving, Morning , the first of series entitled The Four Times of the Day , selling his medicines in Covent Garden . Rock was known for selling a pill for venereal disease . Oliver Goldsmith discusses Rock and his physical appearance in Letter LXVIII of his 1760 work, The Citizen of the World . A seminal point in publishing history. Max s contribution was a gently subversive look at painted faces. Among 1890 s society women make up was rarely used. It was often overtly associated with harlot s and stage people, both of whom had very little social standing. It is only with the rise of great actor dramatists like Sir Henry Irving and Dame Ellen Terry that we begin to see a turn in the tide of feeling. Max always enjoyed poking fun at pomposity. He loved the world of the streets and the stage. He was a frequent visitor to the music halls of the west end. Often being seen at the Hippodrome and the noisy dens of Leicester square.
