The Mexican Revolution was in full swing by 1915. After the assassination of Francisco Madero two years earlier, the presidency of the country was assumed by Victoriano Huerta , but revolutionary forces led by Venustiano Carranza and Pancho Villa overthrew him and Carranzo became president in 1914. Villa however wanted to continue the revolution and an armed struggle ensued. On January 18, 1915 Carranzo s troops captured Guadalajara in southwestern Mexico. He immediately ordered that the families of his troops be transported by train from Colima on the Pacific coast to his newly captured stronghold. Around January 22, 1915 a special train of twenty cars left Colima. It was packed, with people even clinging to the roofs and undercarriages. Somewhere between Colima and Guadalajara the engineer lost control on a long steep descent. As the train gathered speed many people were thrown off as the train negotiated curves. Eventually the entire train plunged off the tracks and into a deep canyon, with less than 300 of the 900 on board surviving the disaster. Some of Carranza s troops, Yaqui people Yaqui Indians committed suicide when hearing of the death of their families. The Gasconade Bridge traindisaster was a rail accident at Gasconade, Missouri on November 1, 1855. At the time of the disaster, the Pacific Railroad was being built west from St. Louis toward the Pacific Ocean. It had been completed to Jefferson City , 125 miles to the west. On November 1 on a day of rain, an inaugural train carrying some 600 invited visitors and dignitaries, set out from St. Louis. As the train started to pass over the Gasconade Bridge, a 760 foot wooden structure spanning the Gasconade River , the span between the bank and the first pier collapsed. It consisted of temporary trestle work. The Locomotive engine and all but one of the 15 Railroad car cars fell off the tracks, some going through the broken wooden timbers, and others rolling down the bank into the river. Thirty one people were killed, and hundreds were injured, making this the worst railroad disaster in Missouri history. The Hommelvik traindisaster was a train collision at Hommelvik Station , on the Mer ker Line today part of the Nordland Line in Norway . On 19 November 1940, a train with workers from Trondheim Central Station to Trondheim Airport, V rnes collided with the local train from Kopper just east of Hommelvik Station. The Hommelvik traindisaster killed 22 people. The trains were supposed to have passed at Hommelvik Station, but the engineer thought he had seen the other train, and had left the station. unreferenced date August 2011 The Gaisal traindisaster occurred on 2 August 1999, when two trains carrying 2,500 people collided at the remote station of Gaisal , 310 miles from the city of Gauhati in Assam . The crash was at such high speeds that the trains actually exploded upon impact killing at least 285 people. Collision The crash occurred at about 1.30am on 2 August, when the Awadh Assam Express from New Delhi was stationary at the station. The Brahmaputra Mail from Dibrugarh , packed with soldiers and security police heading for the border regions at very high speed, through a signalling error, was transferred onto the same track as the express train. Nobody noticed the error on either train, or in the signals office, until the Brahmaputra Mail train crashed headlong into the front of the Awadh Assam Express. The engine of the Awadh Assam was thrown high in the air, and passengers from both trains were blown into neighbouring buildings and fields by the force of the explosion. Emergency Services The line was blocked by wreckage, and the Gaisal emergency services were utterly overwhelmed, as fire swept through the ruined vehicles and station buildings, killing many of the injured people trapped in the trains. Nofootnotes article date February 2008 The Igandu traindisaster was an accident which occurred during the early morning of the 24 June 2002 in the East African country of Tanzania when a large passenger train with over 1,200 people on board rolled backwards down a hill into a stationary goods train, killing 281 people in the worst rail accident in African history. Overview The train had travelled from Dar es Salaam to the state of Dodoma national capital?? in Central Tanzania, had passed Msagali , and was nearing the city of Dodoma, when it began climbing the tracks at a hill called Igandu. It is believed that there was a fault with the train s Brake railway brakes as it climbed the hill. The driver stopped the train near the summit of the hill, inspected and adjusted the braking system and climbed back into the cab. When he started the train again, the brakes failed totally, causing the train to roll, with great velocity, straight back down the hill, crashing into a stationary goods train waiting at the bottom. Local people joined with ambulance services to rescue as many as they could. The shortage of doctors at Dodoma hospital was so severe that the Tanzanian health minister, Dr. Anna Abdallah was obliged to help with the more than 400 people badly injured. Rescue teams were also hampered by the lack of large cutting machinery or industrial equipment needed to cut or lift wreckage off injured people, which did not arrive until the evening. The Sarai Banjara rail disaster occurred on 2 December 2000, when a derailed freight train crossed onto the opposite track early in the morning in Punjab, India . A passenger train coming the other direction hit the freight train head on at speed, killing 46 people and injuring at least 150. The accident started when a cracked rail on the line between Mandi Gobindgarh and Rajpura in Punjab India Punjab derailed a large freight train at 5.40am without causing any injuries. The derailed train was covering both sides of the track, and so the driver dismounted to give a warning. As he was walking to the train office in Sarai Banjara , the Howrah Mail train travelling between Calcutta and Amritsar crashed into the derailed freight train head on at high speed. Although the wreckage did not catch fire, the devastation was serious, with jack knifed carriages, twisted metal and the sheer number of injured people hampering the immediate rescue efforts. Ambulances arrived to take the injured to hospital, whilst local people, working alongsde railway officials and emergency services tried to free the survivors trapped in the wreckage. The final death toll was given as 46 killed and over 150 injured in the crash, although there have been some claims that over 50 people were killed. As is the custom in India , the rail authorities promised by way of compensation 15,000 rupees to the families of the dead, 5,000 rupees to those seriously injured, and 500 to those with minor injuries. Some politicians involved in the investigation initially believed that sabotage may have caused the goods train to derail, but a subsequent investigation concluded that the accident was entirely the result of poor track maintenance, combined with an inefficient warning system in case of emergency.
