Harold Harry Ian Haywood Gibbons 8 October 1904 16 February 1973 , sometimes known as Doc Gibbons , was an England English cricketer a right handed opening batsman and occasional right arm bowler who was the first man to win a county cap for Worcestershire County Cricket Club Worcestershire , as well as a reliable fielder in the deep. Gibbons made his first class cricket first class debut for Worcestershire against the touring New Zealand cricket team New Zealanders at New Road, Worcester New Road in June 1927, making 19 and 17, and taking 2 27 in the first innings, which was to remain his best bowling. He retained his place for the rest of the season, but did not set the world alight. However, 1928 English cricket season the next year was another matter, as he scored four hundreds, including an unbeaten 200 against the West Indies cricket team West Indians in July. Early life and career He was born and raised in Clinton, Massachusetts . In his late teens he travelled to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music . In 1924 he returned to London with the brassless Boston Orchestra for an engagement at the Savoy Hotel in the Strand. He liked Britain so much that he settled there and later became the co leader with Howie Jacobs of the Savoy Orpheans and the bandleader of the New MayFair Orchestra, which recorded for the Gramophone Company on the HMV label.
