It is also used in monochromatic heraldic representations to indicate what the Tincture heraldry tincture of a full colour Blazon emblazon would be. When lines are placed at an angle to one another, it is called cross hatching . Hatching is especially important in essentially linear media, such as drawing, and many forms of printmaking , such as engraving , etching and woodcut . In Western art, hatching originated in the Middle Ages , and developed further into cross hatching, especially in the old master print s of the fifteenth century. Master ES and Martin Schongauer in engraving and Erhard Reuwich and Michael Wolgemut in woodcut were pioneers of both techniques, and Albrecht D rer in particular perfected the technique of crosshatching in both media. Twenty first century artist Larry D. Alexander has created and developed a large body of Pen and Ink Drawings using the crosshatching technique since the early 1990 s. ref http cocatalog.loc.gov cgi bin Pwebrecon.cgi?Search Arg Alexander 2C Larry D.&Search Code NALL&PID 7hgPTsH43 NGlNt8hd8twcRb17De ... forms creating the illusion of volume . It is present in most bird s and reptile s, and similar structures exist in monotreme s, Eleutherodactylus Eleutherodactyl frog s, and spider s. Some lizard s and snake s develop a true tooth that is shed after use other reptiles and birds generally develop an analogous epidermal horn that is reabsorbed or falls off. It is this muscle which gives them the strength to force the egg tooth through the inner membrane of the eggshell. When a chick becomes too large to absorb oxygen through the pores of its eggshell, it uses its egg tooth to peck a hole in the air sac located at the flat end of the egg. This sac provides a few hours worth of air, during which the chick breaks through the eggshell to the outside. The egg tooth falls off several days after hatching. File Bilinska BohdanowiczowaAnn.PortretWlasny.1892.jpg thumb 240px Anna Bili ska Bohdanowicz , Self portrait , 1892, Unfinished portrait showing underdrawing. Underdrawing is the drawing done on a painting ground before paint is applied, for example, an imprimatura or an underpainting . Underdrawing was used extensively by 15th century painters like Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden . These artists underdrew with a brush, using hatching strokes for shading, using water based black paint, before underpainting and overpainting with oils. Cennino D Andrea Cennini 14th century most likely describes a different type of underdrawing, made with graded tones rather than hatching, for egg tempera . In some cases, underdrawing can be clearly visualized using infrared reflectography because carbon black pigments absorb infrared light, whereas opaque pigments such as lead white are transparent with infrared light. What is remarkable about some historical examples of underdrawing, in, for example, the Annunciation van Eyck, Washington or the Arnolfini Portrait , is the extent to which artists made radical alterations to their carefully laid designs.
