Unreferenced date June 2007 Charles Charlie Hurley lang ga Cathal Muirthile born in the village of Kilbrittain , he was Officer Commanding of the 3rd Cork Brigade West Cork of the Irish Republican Army during the Irish War of Independence 1919 1921 . In his adolescence Hurley became a clerk working for the government. In 1905 he was offered a promotion and a transfer to Haulbowline Island . He declined on the grounds that this entailed enlisting in the Royal Navy albeit in a purely administrative role. Hurley led the disastrous Upton Train Ambush on February 15, 1921, in which three IRA men and six civilians were killed. Hurley was also badly wounded in the face. He was killed in action by United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland British troops just before the Crossbarry Ambush in March 1921. Hurley was staying in a house with a pro republican family.Where he was recuperating from serious wounds he had received at Upton month earlier. When he realised that he was surrounded by the British forces he fled the house, as Tom Barry comments in his book, to reduce the danger to those in the house. Barry remarks that Hurley, went to meet his death like a true Irishman. A ballad exists that commemorates him. refimprove date April 2008 Maurice Moore was an Irish republican who fought in the Irish War of Independence and was executed in April 1921 after capture in the aftermath of the Clonmult Ambush . Moore was born at Ticnock, Cobh , County Cork in 1897. He was educated at the local Presentation Brothers National School and after school began work as a plumber s mate at Haulbowline dockyard then a British naval establishment . His family had strong republican connections and he joined Irish Volunteers in Cobh in 1916. Three of his brothers were also members and they all subsequently served with the Irish Republican Army as members of the 4th Battalion, Cork No.1 Brigade. As a member of the Cobh Company of the IRA Moore took part in the capture of Carrigtwohill Royal Irish Constabulary RIC barracks which was the first police barracks captured by republicans in the War of Independence. He was later involved in the capture of Cloyne RIC barracks and numerous other actions of the local IRA against British crown forces. In February 1921 Moore was one of a flying column of over 20 IRA men billeted in an old farmhouse at Clonmult, near Midleton under Commandant Diarmuid Hurley . They were tracked down and surrounded by a company of the Hampshire Regiment of the British Army and RIC, Black and Tans and Auxiliaries. In the ensuing gunfight 12 of the republicans were killed and eight captured, including Maurice Moore. The group were given a military courtmartial and all were sentenced to death. Seven of them later had their sentences commuted but two, Moore and his lifelong friend Paddy O Sullivan were executed on 28 April 1921. He was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1983 1984. His son Fergal was elected to the city council for the Cork South West electoral area in 2004. He stood unsuccessfully at the 1977 general election for the Cork Mid D il ireann constituency Cork Mid constituency until 1979 when he was narrowly defeated in a by election for the Cork City D il ireann constituency Cork City constituency by Fine Gael s Liam Burke in one of a string of by election defeats for the Fianna F il government.
