The Hawaiian sling is a device used in spearfishing . The sling operates much like a bow and arrow on land, but energy is stored in rubber tubing rather than a wooden or fiberglass shaft. Description Mechanically, the device is simple the only moving parts are the spear shaft and the rubber tubing. A loop of tubing is attached to a block of material, often wood, with a hole drilled in it which is slightly larger in diameter than the shaft. The shaft is placed in the hole, notched in the loop and pulled back, tensioning the tubing. When the shaft is released, the tubing propels it forward, faster and further than a free diving diver could by hand. The Hawaiian sling has some similarities to speargun s and polespear s, in that all are powered by energy stored in rubber tubing. However, it occupies a middle ground between the two the sling is somewhat more powerful than a polespear and offers a much more comfortable grip, but is less powerful than most spearguns. Like a polespear, the diver must exert force on the shaft to keep it from releasing, whereas a speargun has a trigger mechanism to accomplish this. Hawaiian slings are especially popular among divers who want a more challenging hunt, or those operating in areas where triggered spearguns are banned. Bermuda is one such location, as are the Bahamas , and Okinawa, Japan . The modern Hawaiian sling was popularised in the mid 1950s however, fishing slings are mentioned in anthropological journals as early as 1917. ref Hawaiian Squid Hook Sinkers and Sling Stones , J. Hawaiian scale is the conventional wave height measurement used by surfing surfers in Hawaii , also used in Australia and parts of South Africa . The measurement is always in feet and scaled so the actual height on the face is roughly twice what s quoted. So a 3 foot wave would be head high to a 6 foot person , or 2 foot around chest high. 6 to 8 foot would be 2 to approaching 3 times head high. Large waves are difficult to judge though, and the measurement becomes a little fuzzy towards 20 feet. The origin of the scale is obscure. The candidates are Hawaiian life guards calling smaller sizes to keep tourists away. The measurement is from the back of the wave, or from wave buoy readings. Macho understatement by early surfers. In Australia, which is otherwise SI metric , feet are still used by surfers and surf specific media e.g. Australia s Surfing Life ASL and Tracks magazine Tracks magazines . Some of the non surfing media make an attempt at metrication by direct conversion eg. ref http goldcoast.seafm.com.au includes pages surfreport.htm Sea FM surf report ref , so 3 feet becomes 1 metre. In 1970 two important events took place. First, Waialua Agricultural Co. announced that they planned to scrap their 0 6 2T locomotive No. 6 because rust and deterioration had reduced the engine to an unsightly liability and posed a danger to the local kids who played on her. John Knaus then contacted Bill Paty who was the manager of Waialua Agricultural Co. about saving and restoring the locomotive. John then contacted his boss, Captain Henry Davies, of the Naval Ammunition Depot, Lualualei about having the locomotive moved there since it had the only locomotive facility left on Oahu. This was followed by a letter to Ed Bernsten of the National Railway Historical Society seeking information on organizing a local chapter. John received approval to have No. 6 restored at Lualualei. He then talked to Nick Carter, another rail fan who had expressed interest in saving the Navy mainline on the leeward coast for an operating railroad. On August 22, 1970, John Knaus, Nick Carter, Luman Wilcox and Ken Peale met at Coco s Restaurant to discuss forming a local chapter of the NRHS. Wilcox was appointed to draw up the temporary by laws. On August 27th an organizational meeting was held at Cocco s with 15 people in attendance. Wilcox entertained a motion to organize forming a local chapter of the NRHS.
