He played many different roles, typically as a somewhat blustery sort, such as a politician. A short, fat man, Elliott played Santa Claus on the Jimmy Durante , Andy Griffith , Red Skelton , and Jack Benny shows. Elliott had a couple of memorable lines in It s a Wonderful Life 1946 , where he scolded James Stewart actor James Stewart , who was trying to say goodnight to Donna Reed , advising him to stop hemming and hawing and just go ahead and kiss her. He also had a few memorable appearances in episodes of the Adventures of Superman TV series Adventures of Superman TV series. He is perhaps best known as Mayor Pike in early episodes of The Andy Griffith Show , which would prove to be almost his last screen work. He is buried in Forest Lawn Glendale. After chasing down the neighbor s dog, which has absconded with the errant digit, Carol eventually recovers it, But as the couple races to the hospital to have the finger reattached, Carol discovers that Glenn has been unfaithful. Indignant, she decides that she is not giving it back until Glenn confesses to the identity of his affair. After much hemming and hawing, Glenn eventually acknowledges that it is Pam Cynthia Watros , who also just happens to be Carol s best friend.
