  1. Overture (Bruckner)

In 1862 1863 Anton Bruckner composed the Overture in G minor WAB 98 . br By contrast to the earlier Four Orchestral Pieces Bruckner Four Orchestral Pieces and the next Study Symphony Symphony in F minor , the Overture appears a much more mature work really the overture to the mature Bruckner. Bruckner s characteristics are already present the opening subject with his octave interval in unison as that of the main theme of the Symphony No. 9 Bruckner Ninth Symphony , the full orchestral chords followed by Sixteenth note semiquaver runs, and the second slower subject with its large interval leaps, which is prefiguring the descending motive of the Adagio of the Symphony No. 5 Bruckner Fifth Symphony . The orchestral setting is similar to that of the March in D minor, except that the second flute is replaced by a piccolo . The original 1862 version of the Overture had a different Coda music coda at bars 233 288. This was replaced and approved by Kitzler with a new coda bars 233 288 in the final version of 1863. The coda of the coda bars 289 301 is the same in both versions. The score of the Overture was given by Bruckner to his friend Cyrill Hynais, together with that of Four Orchestral Pieces and the Study Symphony Symphony in F minor . 1. Aotearoa (overture)

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Aotearoa is an overture written for orchestra by New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn in 1940. The overture is one of three early works by Lilburn which center on the theme of national identity the other two are 1944 s Landfall in Unknown Seas , for narrator and orchestra, and the tone poem A Song of Islands of 1946. The title of the overture Aotearoa is taken from the M ori language M ori name for the islands. Lilburn wrote the overture while he was still a student at London s Royal College of Music , and it was premiered in Great Britain , at His Majesty s Theatre in London. It was not performed in New Zealand until 1959, but it has since entered the standard orchestral repertory there. Typical of Lilburn s early work, the overture features idiomatic writing for winds, especially flutes, and vigorous dynamic contrasts. At least two recordings of Aotearoa have been made. 1. Italian overture

Unreferenced date December 2009 The Italian overture is a piece of orchestra l music with which in the late 17th and early 18th centuries several opera s, oratorio s and other large scale works opened. An Italian overture typically has a three movement music movement structure the outer movements are quick, the middle movement slow. This type of overture was particularly popular among Italian composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti . In the early 18th century such type of overture would usually be called sinfonia , later, to avoid confusion with other types of sinfonia symphony , the term Italian overture was used more frequently. The structure of the Italian overture sinfonia was the base from which the Classical period music classical form of the symphony developed around the middle of the 18th century. 1. Tragic Overture

about the overture by Brahms the overture by Dvo k Tragic Overture Dvo k The Tragic Overture German Tragische Ouvert re , opus number Op. 81, is a Overture Concert overture concert overture for orchestra written by Johannes Brahms during the summer of 1880. It premiered on December 26, 1880 in Vienna . Most performances last between twelve and fifteen minutes. Brahms chose the title tragedy Tragic to emphasize the turbulent, tormented character of the piece, in essence a free standing symphonic movement, in contrast to the mirthful ebullience of a companion piece he wrote the same year, the Academic Festival Overture . Despite its name, the Tragic Overture does not follow any specific dramatic program music program . Brahms was not very interested in musical storytelling and was more concerned with conveying and eliciting emotional impressions. He summed up the effective difference between the two overtures when he declared one laughs while the other cries. Brahms quotes some material from the last movement of the Symphony No. 2 Brahms Second Symphony in this overture. The Tragic Overture comprises three main sections, all in the key music key of D minor . Allegro ma non troppo Molto pi moderato Tempo primo ma tranquillo . Theorists have disagreed in analyzing the form of the piece Jackson finds Webster s multifarious description rather obscurist and prefers to label the work s form as a reversed sonata design in which the second group is recapitulated before the first, with Ludwig van Beethoven Beethoven s Coriolan Overture as a possible formal model. ref Timothy L. Overture description5 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann , performed by the Advent Chamber Orchestra with cellist Stephen Balderston The French overture is a musical form widely used in the Baroque music Baroque period. Its basic formal division is into two parts, which are usually enclosed by double bars and repeat signs. They are complementary in styles slow in dotted rhythms and fast in Fugue fugal style , and the first ends with a half cadence i.e., on a dominant harmony that requires an answering structure with a tonic ending. The second section often but not always ends with a brief recollection of the first, sometimes even repeating some of its melodic content Waterman and Anthony 2001 ... 1. Drysdale Overture

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 The Drysdale Overture of 1937 is among the earliest works for orchestra by New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn . The piece was written while Lilburn was a student at the Royal College of Music , and was based on something of a challenge from his professor, Ralph Vaughan Williams . Reportedly, Vaughan Williams had begun his teaching by asking Lilburn to write fugue s and part song s one day, though, he asked, Isn t it time you composed something? Lilburn responded by producing the overture. Lilburn later reported that his score greatly upset George Dyson composer Sir George Dyson , to whom he brought it for piano reduction. Dyson found it to be a mess he did, however, give it a read through with the College orchestra. The overture is dedicated to Robert Lilburn, the composer s father. It is meant to celebrate the family farm and estate upon which Lilburn was born. In writing it, the composer once wrote that he was left with that lovely Mark Twain image of Jim and Huckleberry Finn character Huckleberry drifting on their barge down that great river, looking up at the stars and wondering whether they was made, or only just happened The Drysdale Overture has been recorded by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra under William Southgate Sir William Southgate . 1. Overture Respighiana

Overture Overture Respighiana Overtura Respighiana was composed by Salvatore Di Vittorio in 2008, as an homage to Ottorino Respighi . The work was written one year before Di Vittorio s completion of Respighi s rediscovered first Violin Concerto in A major Respighi Violin Concerto in A Major . Instrumentation & Duration The overture is scored for two flutes II Piccolo , two oboes II English horn , two clarinets in A, two bassoons , two French horn horns in F, two trumpets , 3 trombones , 1 tuba , timpani , 3 percussion triangle, antique cymbals, glockenspiel, snare drum, tambourine, cymbals, bass drum, and tam tam , celesta , harp , and string section strings . Duration is approximately 7 minutes. History The overture was composed as an homage not only to Ottorino Respighi , but Respighi s homage works on Gioacchino Rossini La Boutique Fantasque and Rossiniana . The beginning of the overture captures the orchestral sounds of the introduction of Pines of Rome , though with new melodies, simultaneously citing elements of Respighi s Rossiniana . Through fanfares, the music leads to a variation of the March from La Boutique Fantasque . A brief sarabande styled interlude is given, inspired from the Valse Lente movement of La Boutique Fantasque La Boutique . The final section involves a tarantella dance in the style of Gioacchino Rossini Rossini , which ends with a rocket crescendo. The overture demonstrates Respighi s influence on Di Vittorio, also through Rossini s influence on the music of Ottorino Respighi Respighi . World Premiere and Recording The overture received its world premiere under Salvatore Di Vittorio and the Chamber Orchestra of New York on February 13, 2010 at the St. Jean Baptiste Catholic Church Church of St. Jean Baptiste in New York . The overture was recorded for Naxos Records 8.572333. Publisher This work was published in 2008 by Edizioni Panastudio in Italy .
